The Core Facility Research Specialist 3 (A) executes complex research protocols in the performance of research activities within revenue generating Shared Resource (SR) core facilities. The incumbent functions as a liaison between the SR Director, the Research Lab Supervisor and Research staff for laboratory and equipment maintenance, compliance, ordering, and maintaining inventory records. The incumbent displays proficiency in all revenue-producing applications included in the menu of services at a given time of the Shared Resource and trains other staff and users in SR applications. The Core Facility Research Specialist 3 (A) research, beta tests and independently develops new services, platforms or equipment that the core is evaluating as candidates for implementation and incorporation in the SR’s menu of services. The specialist manages new projects from initiation to completion with minimal supervision and interacts with users (Investigators, Trainees and Staff) in a professional, customer-service oriented manner. The Department Specific Functions include contributing to basic and applied research activities by collecting and analyzing cytometric data, performing complex cell sorting and single cell flow-cloning, and performing standard laboratory procedures in support of CyTOF studies (i.e., antibody conjugations, sample preparation, tissue staining and sample acquisition). The role also involves using sophisticated computer software for data analysis, instrument reservation and billing, understanding and interpreting research protocols, procedures, and developing reagent panels. The specialist will maintain an overview of relevant research findings and the development of SOPs, participate in the publication of significant results, and ensure all research is undertaken according to good research practice and laboratory safety. Additionally, the role includes designing, evaluating, and implementing methods, protocols, and panels for assigned research projects, preparing and distributing monthly invoices for flow cytometric services, and diagnosing and troubleshooting problems with instruments and computers. The specialist will also recommend the purchase and up-grading of equipment, oversee and ensure the safe handling of hazardous biological materials, prepare analytical reports relative to research data, and adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures while safeguarding University assets.
