About The Position

Salesforce is seeking experienced Core Database Internals Engineers with a strong background in database internals and distributed systems to join a team responsible for architecting, developing, and testing the next generation of cloud-native database. The role involves joining a team of highly skilled software engineers and database experts to design and develop robust, highly scalable software products to support Salesforce's rapid growth. Familiarity with database internals, distributed systems, or networking; interest in systems programming; strong software engineering skills; and enthusiasm for working on complex, highly concurrent, scalable, and resilient systems are required. The candidate should have a track record of end-to-end ownership of architecture, design, implementation, monitoring, testing, and product support on large, mission-critical systems at petabyte scale. Areas of work may include logging/recovery, distributed lock management, distributed transactions, networking, cluster management, replication, high availability, monitoring, and serviceability. The team operates in a fast-paced, highly collaborative, agile environment and values end-to-end service ownership.

Requirements

  • BS or higher degree in Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong CS fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems.
  • 6+ years of experience in systems or database internals programming.
  • 6+ years of experience designing, building, and supporting large-scale systems.
  • Deep expertise in distributed computing (e.g., system architecture, communication, distributed consensus, and transactional protocols).
  • Strong understanding of low-level operating system concepts, including multi-threading, memory management, networking, storage, performance, and scale.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with a results-oriented approach and good ideas for innovation.
  • Ability to learn quickly and deliver high-quality code in a fast-paced, dynamic, agile team environment.
  • Strong Java or C programming skills.

Nice To Haves

  • MS or PhD in databases or distributed systems is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop core distributed database system functionality.
  • Develop new architecture and designs to solve complex scalability problems.
  • Generate ideas to improve robustness and performance.
  • Implement comprehensive functional and system tests for your area of responsibility and for overall database quality.
  • Debug issues, conduct root cause analysis, and diagnose defects.
  • Actively participate in the release and deployment process.
