About The Position

The primary responsibility of the Sacrament Preparation Coordinator is to assist the Director of Faith Formation in preparing the youth of St. Mary’s Parish and Schools for the sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, and Confirmation. The position also includes welcoming children seeking full initiation into the Catholic Church through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA), adapted for children, as well as preparing children between the ages of 4–6 for the sacrament of Baptism. The candidate must be able to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends. The Coordinator will be directly accountable to the Director of Faith Formation, who will serve as the Coordinator’s immediate supervisor. The Coordinator will be responsible for keeping the Director informed of all activities that fall under this job description and will work with the Director in making decisions involving these areas of catechesis and ministry.

Requirements

  • Must be a confirmed and practicing Catholic, able to fully participate in the sacramental life of the Church.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience working or volunteering with a wide range of age groups, including elementary, middle school, and high school students.
  • An understanding of and passion for the Catholic faith, along with the ability to accompany youth and their families in developing and maintaining a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Ability to recruit, manage, and coordinate teams of volunteers and catechists.
  • Strong desire to be part of a faith formation team and collaborate effectively with others.
  • Willingness, ability, and creativity to learn and develop new programs in collaboration with the Director of Faith Formation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be comfortable and skilled in public speaking to large gatherings of parents and children.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and virtual platforms (e.g., Zoom).

Nice To Haves

  • A degree in religious education, theology, or a related field is preferred but not required, depending on the applicant’s years of experience.
  • Parish experience working or volunteering in religious education, family ministry, and/or youth ministry is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare children and their parents for the reception of the sacraments, ensuring that such preparation encourages a lifelong commitment to growing in relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Faith Formation, coordinate all aspects of sacramental preparation, including but not limited to planning and conducting lessons, facilitating parent sessions, organizing retreats, and scheduling and planning liturgies.
  • With the assistance of the Administrative Assistant, track all necessary documents, including baptism certificates, registration forms, sponsor forms and certificates, service forms, and Confirmation candidate forms, and coordinate any required supplies.
  • Collaborate with the Youth Minister to plan and coordinate retreats and pilgrimages. Assist with youth ministry events as needed.
  • Communicate with parents of sacramental candidates through the website, newsletters, emails, phone calls, and in-person meetings.
  • Commit to following Archdiocesan policies and procedures and attending applicable Archdiocesan meetings.
