Position Summary The Coordinator of ESY Special Education Services assists the Director of ESY in managing the specialized summer programming for Salem Public Schools (SPS). This role is vital to ensuring high-quality experiences for students with disabilities who require extended school-year services. The Coordinator supports the delivery of services in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) with a focus on direct specialized instruction for students from preschool through age 22. The Coordinator works under the direction of the ESY Director and in collaboration with district leadership to ensure strict compliance with IDEA and Massachusetts regulations while maintaining a culture of equity, high expectations, and proactive family engagement.

Requirements

  • Required Massachusetts teaching certification in Special Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 3–5+ years of successful teaching and leadership experiences in special education, specifically working with students across a wide range of ages and abilities.
  • Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement required.
  • Strong working knowledge of IDEA and MA special education regulations; proficiency in IEP software (eSped).
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills; Bilingual proficiency (Spanish and/or Portuguese) is a significant plus.
  • Ability to walk around the premises, stoop, bend, climb stairs, and kneel.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk or standing during program supervision.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds; rarely up to 50 pounds.

  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Bilingual proficiency (Spanish and/or Portuguese) is a significant plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director in supporting summer special education staff (teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers) to ensure all instructional activities are implemented with fidelity.
  • Assist with screening, hiring, and assigning summer program staff; help manage staff absences and coverage needs.
  • Support the delivery of targeted professional development and assist in facilitating staff meetings to ensure smooth program operations.
  • Provide informal feedback and support to special education staff to maintain high instructional standards.
  • Maintain accurate electronic student records and IEP databases (e.g., Frontline/eSped). Ensure all student files are complete and up to date.
  • Assist in managing attendance, incident and academic data
  • Support the implementation of positive behavioral supports (including ABA and social skills development) and ensure a safe, healthy environment for all students.
  • Maintain active, two-way communication with parents and families to address concerns, facilitate program access, and build community trust.
  • Work with the Director to coordinate program logistics, including supplies, scheduling, and coordination with other summer program sites.
  • Collect data and observations to assist the Director in making recommendations to improve future summer programming.
