About The Position

This position serves as the nursing supervisor for all nurses employed in the district. The Coordinator-Nursing is responsible for conducting performance appraisals, making recommendations for employment actions, and implementing policies approved by the Board of Education. This role also involves planning and managing the budget for health services, administering first aid, identifying and referring health problems, and reporting child abuse and neglect. The Coordinator advises on educational program modifications to meet student health needs, collaborates on mandatory training, and reviews health services program records. They also assist the Public Health Department, coordinate health services personnel, and serve as a liaison between health services staff and administrators. Additionally, this role coordinates services with other agencies, manages a wellness program for faculty and staff, oversees immunization compliance and student health screenings, and acts as the system AED coordinator. The position adheres to regulations from the Alabama Board of Nursing and the Alabama State Department of Education, participates in professional development, and attends meetings related to student health and wellness. The Coordinator also acts as a liaison between the school district, families, medical professionals, and agencies, and recommends student exclusion and re-admission based on infectious and contagious diseases. This position is subject to the Students First Act of 2011 and may be filled by transfer of a qualified internal applicant. No credit toward tenure is earned if hired after September 30.

Requirements

  • Valid Alabama license to practice as a registered nurse
  • Any other certificate required by state law
  • Valid CPR Certification for Healthcare Professionals
  • Valid Alabama driver’s license
  • Minimum of Bachelor in Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • At least 3 years of previous experience in school nursing.
  • Knowledge of School Nursing laws and regulations and Alabama Board of Nursing Standards of Practice
  • Knowledge of effective procedures and practices for vision, hearing and other appropriate health screening activities.
  • Knowledge of and experience with principles and theories of adult learning for effective staff development and in-service activities.
  • Knowledge of current general medical and pediatric nursing practices.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective leadership skills in group settings.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to organize, maintain and report data and information related to health services.
  • Ability to use effective public relations skills necessary for the successful implementation of programs, the coordination of committees and to maintain productive relationships with colleagues.
  • Knowledge of Board policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of school system functions, departments, personnel and schools necessary for the efficient and effective processing of communications, requesting of needed information and implementation of the school nursing programs.
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.
  • Ability to travel between the schools throughout the school system.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as nursing supervisor for all nurses employed in the district.
  • Conducts performance appraisals on assigned employees and makes recommendations for appropriate employment action.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations on proposed policies and/or changes to existing policies, and implements policies approved by the Board of Education.
  • Writes procedures pertaining to Health Services when needed and reviews, and updates procedures annually.
  • Plans and submits proposed budget; implements and maintains approved budget for health services.
  • Assists school personnel in maintaining environmental standards in school.
  • Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
  • Identifies health problems of children and make referrals for treatment to the proper source.
  • Reports child abuse and neglect to the Department of Human Resources.
  • Provides staffing recommendations to Superintendent based on acuity of students’ health needs in each school.
  • Compiles data on health services and disseminates reports to appropriate agencies.
  • Advises on modification of educational program to meet health needs of individual students and coordinates with clinic nurses in developing and maintaining medical health plans.
  • Collaborates with nursing staff and administrators for implementation of system-wide student and employee mandatory training/ education.
  • Reviews health services program records and procedures annually; provides monthly and annual reports as requested.
  • Assists the Public Health Department in the programs for primary prevention and control of communicable diseases.
  • Coordinates selection and assignment of health services personnel; trains, supervises, and evaluates health services staff.
  • Serves as liaison between health services staff and administrative personnel.
  • Coordinates services with other health and social agencies to render health services program more effective.
  • Coordinates wellness program for faculty and staff.
  • Coordinates immunization compliance and student health screenings such as hearing, vision, state mandated scoliosis, and other screenings as necessary.
  • Assumes the role and responsibility of the system AED coordinator.
  • Adheres to rules and regulations mandated by the Alabama Board of Nursing and the Alabama State Department of Education.
  • Participates in professional organizations and educational programs.
  • Participates in meetings regarding the health and wellness of students (i.e., IEP/504 meetings, Crisis Action Team, Preventative Measures, etc.) as needed.
  • Acts as a liaison between the school district, students’ families, medical professionals, and various agencies to promote effective school health management.
  • Recommends exclusion and re-admission of students in compliance with Board policy on infections and contagious diseases.
