About The Position

This position is supported by the Empowering Indigenous Pathways project funded by the Mastercard Foundation’s Recognizing Leadership in Education Program. The Coordinator, Indigenous Alumni Initiatives, will help strengthen connections between SFU and Indigenous students and alumni by creating meaningful opportunities for engagement, storytelling, and community building. Working across Alumni Relations and Ceremonies & Events, the Coordinator will plan and support Indigenous community-focused and informed events, gather feedback to inform future engagement initiatives, and help advance representation within key university celebrations, including convocation. The ideal candidate is a relationship builder with a demonstrated commitment to Indigenous engagement, community development, and culturally informed practices. They bring strong coordination, communication, and partner engagement skills, along with the ability to listen deeply, build trust, and foster meaningful connections. Success in this role requires cultural humility, sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to work collaboratively with Indigenous communities, students, alumni, and university partners. Experience supporting engagement programs, gathering community feedback, and managing multiple priorities in a complex environment would be considered an asset.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree or diploma in Arts, Business Administration or Communications and two years of related experience working with Indigenous and multicultural groups, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated experience and understanding of Indigenous ceremony, protocols, and ways of knowing.
Excellent knowledge of Coast Salish culture and traditions, as well as other Indigenous cultures and traditions; awareness and understanding of the Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) Calls to Action; SFU’s Indigenous Council Office recommendations.
Excellent knowledge of effective volunteer engagement and management principles and practices of community engagement.
Good knowledge of University policies and procedures, and Freedom of Information/Protection of Privacy Act regulations.
Good knowledge of fundraising concepts and best practice.
