About The Position

This position is responsible for providing emergency medical assessment and care to students, employees, visitors, and other persons on Delgado Community College property. The role involves responding to medical emergencies, maintaining emergency equipment, staying current on health advisories, and managing safety and compliance programs related to bloodborne pathogens and public access defibrillation. Additionally, the Coordinator will lead health education and prevention initiatives, including substance abuse prevention and public health awareness, and administer the College's Drug and Alcohol Awareness and Prevention Program. The position also entails administrative duties such as record-keeping, compliance monitoring, reporting, and collaboration with various college departments and external agencies.

Requirements

  • Associate degree from an accredited college in Emergency Medical Services, Paramedicine, Health Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Successful completion of a state-approved Paramedic education program.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of emergency medical assessment, Advanced Life Support principles, emergency response procedures, infection prevention, bloodborne pathogen precautions, and applicable health and safety practices.
  • Ability to recognize signs and symptoms of suspected opioid overdose and administer intranasal naloxone when clinically indicated and authorized.
  • Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to medical emergencies and campus crisis situations and exercise sound professional judgment in high pressure and sensitive situations.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with students, faculty, staff, Campus Police, emergency responders, healthcare professionals, College leadership, and external agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records and safeguard confidential medical, exposure, incident, and compliance information.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic information systems used for documentation, reporting, training records, and program administration.
  • Physical ability to respond to medical emergencies throughout College facilities and grounds and to perform emergency medical functions consistent with the duties of a licensed Paramedic.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, perform CPR, operate emergency medical equipment, move emergency supplies, and assist with emergency response activities.
  • Flexibility to respond to College needs, which may include evenings, weekends, emergency situations, special events, training activities, and College-wide assignments.
  • College-wide health services and emergency response responsibilities, potentially requiring travel to Delgado campuses and sites.
  • Current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Paramedic certification.
  • Current and unrestricted Louisiana Paramedic license issued by the Louisiana Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
  • Current Basic Life Support CPR and AED certification.
  • Must complete and maintain College-approved naloxone administration training.
  • Must maintain all required licenses, certifications, and training throughout employment.
  • Passing pre-employment criminal background screen is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in EMS, Paramedicine, Health Sciences, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Emergency Management, Nursing, or related field.
  • Experience providing Paramedic level emergency medical services in a higher education, institutional, public health, or comparable setting.
  • Experience coordinating health education, emergency preparedness, CPR and AED programs, bloodborne pathogen compliance, accident and incident reporting, or other health and safety programs.
  • Experience maintaining confidential health and compliance records and working collaboratively with law enforcement, emergency medical services, healthcare providers, and public health agencies.
  • Current CPR and AED Instructor certification.
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Instructor certification or documented experience providing bloodborne pathogen training.
  • Training or certification in emergency preparedness, public health, or health and safety compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide emergency medical assessment and care within the authorized Louisiana Paramedic scope of practice.
  • Respond to accidents, illnesses, injuries, and other medical emergencies, coordinating with Campus Police.
  • Administer intranasal naloxone for suspected opioid overdoses when clinically indicated and authorized.
  • Determine the need for additional emergency medical services and coordinate ambulance transport.
  • Maintain emergency medical equipment, medications, and supplies.
  • Stay current on health emergencies, infectious disease concerns, and public health advisories.
  • Perform Health Services Coordinator responsibilities under the Comprehensive Safety Program, Accident and Incident Reporting Route, and Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  • Respond to accidents and incidents, administer first aid, and arrange additional medical care when necessary.
  • Complete required State of Louisiana Office of Risk Management documentation (Forms DA 2000 and DA 3000).
  • Coordinate occupational exposure response involving blood or other potentially infectious materials.
  • Maintain confidential exposure and medical records, occupational exposure logs, and training documentation.
  • Coordinate Bloodborne Pathogens training and maintain applicable training records.
  • Administer the College's Public Access Defibrillation Program.
  • Coordinate with various departments to support College-wide AED readiness.
  • Maintain the College-wide AED inventory, inspection and maintenance schedule, and equipment status.
  • Coordinate or provide required CPR and AED training for authorized personnel.
  • Participate in determining appropriate AED locations and ensure equipment remains operational.
  • Respond to and provide follow-up for reported sudden cardiac arrest incidents involving College AED equipment.
  • Support health-related emergency preparedness planning, training, and response activities.
  • Coordinate College health education and prevention initiatives addressing wellness, nutrition, substance abuse, infectious disease, and emergency preparedness.
  • Administer Health Services responsibilities associated with the Drug and Alcohol Awareness and Prevention Program.
  • Coordinate required educational information and resources for students and employees.
  • Plan and coordinate health fairs, educational presentations, and partnerships with healthcare providers and public health agencies.
  • Coordinate or support opioid overdose awareness, prevention, and naloxone education.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely Health Services records and documentation.
  • Maintain a compliance calendar for professional license, certification, training, and reporting deadlines.
  • Prepare required departmental, compliance, program, and operational reports.
  • Maintain data necessary to evaluate Health Services activities and support institutional reporting.
  • Collaborate with Student Affairs, Campus Police, Safety and Risk Management, Human Resources, and other stakeholders.
  • Participate in College committees, emergency response activities, and special events.
  • Perform other related duties and assignments as directed by the Director of Student Life or appropriate College leadership.
