About The Position

Student Leadership and Involvement in Student Life at James Madison University is currently seeking applicants for the Coordinator for Student Life, Leadership Experiences. This position will provide support to our student leadership programs, supervise one graduate assistant, as well as undergraduate student employees, and provide direction for the Make Your Mark on Madison Program. This position serves as a campus security authority under the Jean Cleary Campus Safety Act. The Division of Student Affairs includes University Career Center, Center for Multicultural Student Services, Community Engagement and Volunteer Center, Counseling Center, the Office of the Dean of Students, Disability Services, Student Accountability & Restorative Practices, Orientation & Transition, Residence Life, Student Life, University Health Center, University Recreation, and Well Dukes. The division is an integral part of the campus community and works collaboratively with the other divisions of the university in supporting the mission, vision, and values of the university. • Demonstrated previous professional experience in a higher education/college student affairs setting, or similar environment

Responsibilities

• Supervise the Graduate Assistant for Leadership Development and various undergraduate student employees, including the Student Directors for the Make Your Mark on Madison program. Oversee hiring, training, scheduling, performance management, payroll processing, and employment documentation. Foster a welcoming and supportive team culture by setting clear expectations, providing ongoing feedback and professional development opportunities, and promoting excellence, accountability, and mutual respect.
• Implement, maintain, and annually assess the Make Your Mark on Madison Program (MYMOM). This includes programming, marketing, scheduling, assessment, and recruitment of leadership counselors. Attending and co-leading Monday program nights with Student Directors is expected. Teach and accept full responsibility for all aspects of HRD 475, the 3-credit hour academic course during fall semester for the leadership counselors of the Make Your Mark on Madison program. This includes maintaining an accurate canvas page, using theory informed or research informed teaching, keeping curriculum current through regular content review and updates, and submitting grades in a timely manner.
• Develop, coordinate, and facilitate individual leadership development initiatives for JMU students under the direction of the Assistant Director for Student Leadership Development. Responsibilities include designing and delivering programs such as Madison Leads, leadership workshops, and one-on-one coaching experiences. Support the planning, promotion, and implementation of departmental programs through strategic marketing efforts, website management, and other communication channels. Collaborate with student organizations to advance leadership development through educational programming, leadership coaching, and organizational accountability support.
• Work with Assistant and Associate Director to develop and implement ongoing assessment efforts with the expressed purpose of measuring attainment of objectives and program improvement. Assessment should ascertain needs, participation and non-participation demographics, participant satisfaction, and accomplishment of stated goals and learning objectives. Assessment results should inform resource allocation, program improvement, and marketing processes. Propose new programs, resources, or services based on assessment results.
• Coordinate with Student Leadership and Involvement staff to maintain a budget, ensure appropriate and effective use of available resources, and assist in the annual budget development process.
• Proactively develop and maintain collaborative relationships with other university stakeholders where such relationships would promote efficiency and/or effectiveness in fulfilling the Student Life mission. This includes but does not limit to the Office of Student Accountability and Restorative Practices and the College of Education.
• Serve on department and university committees as assigned. Actively participate in accomplishing established goals and objectives. Support departmental mission and comply with position related federal, state, local and JMU law and policy. This position is specifically subject to adherence to the Jean Clery Act requirements and JMU Policy 4303 Use of University Vehicles. Assist in the facilitation of hazing prevention presentations.
• Accomplish a minimum of 20 hours of professional development, attend Student Life professional development training, participate in staff retreats and other job-related training specific to SLI. Effectively utilize conferences and other professional development opportunities as tools for staying current in the field of student leadership programs.
