About The Position

At Heart & Stroke, the Coordinator, Advocacy and Public Engagement supports the Stop Marketing to Kids Coalition and other advocacy and public engagement initiatives. This role involves working with the Policy & Advocacy team, Coalition members, and the Youth Against Marketing to Kids council to promote a healthier food environment for children and advance federal regulations on unhealthy food and beverage marketing. The incumbent will coordinate meetings, manage communications with external stakeholders, prepare advocacy materials, build relationships with the Coalition, and guide the youth council. Additionally, this position supports public engagement campaigns by engaging stakeholders in advocacy actions, managing campaign budgets, and coordinating short-term advocacy projects.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree, diploma or equivalent combination of education and related work experience in political science, communications, public policy, or public health preferred.
  • General understanding of government relations and demonstrated interest in advocacy, health policy or communications.
  • Stakeholder relations experience.
  • Experience with Google Drive and Google Docs, SharePoint and MS Teams.
  • Experience coordinating volunteers.
  • Analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Creative problem-solving approaches.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment: flexibility, communication skills, reliability and collaboration.
  • Ability to multitask, work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment and handle changes of plans or “course of action”.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines.
  • Eagerness to learn, capacity to adopt new digital tools.
  • Applicants must be currently residing in Canada and legally entitled to work in Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Planning and coordination of Coalition meetings, including drafting agendas and preparing minutes.
  • Liaising with Coalition members and supporting them on sharing materials or following up on action items.
  • Coordinating meetings with external stakeholders, government officials, and Heart & Stroke constituents.
  • Documenting and tracking the Coalition’s government meetings.
  • Drafting advocacy and communications materials, such as briefing materials, letters, and emails.
  • Coordinating updates to the stopmarketingtokids.ca website.
  • Preparing and distributing regular newsletter/list-serve communications for Coalition supporters.
  • Maintaining and updating the Coalition stakeholder contact list.
  • Coordinating and guiding the Youth Against Marketing to Kids council, including co-developing annual plans and facilitating meetings.
  • Documenting and reporting on the youth council's activities and identifying opportunities for collaboration.
  • Maintaining existing project budgets, filing contracts and invoices, and appropriately filing advocacy briefings/policy updates/new research.
  • Supporting the team with internal content reviews, legal, and brand review processes.
  • Supporting the dissemination of project updates or new evidence/materials to stakeholders.
