About The Position

Community Action Wayne/Medina (CAW/M) is seeking a dependable and caring Cook to prepare nutritious meals that support children’s health, learning, and development while maintaining a safe and welcoming kitchen environment. This is a Part-Time, Part-Year position with a pay range of $16.55–$17.56/hour.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Six months of food service experience preferred; experience in a school, childcare, or institutional kitchen is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of safe food handling, sanitation, and food storage practices.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required food safety certification.
  • Valid State of Ohio driver’s license, reliable transportation, and ability to remain insurable under the Agency’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, including recipes, menus, meal patterns, and food service procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage time effectively, and meet meal service schedules.
  • Professionalism, dependability, integrity, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of required pre-employment screenings, including a drug screen, physical examination, background check, and motor vehicle record (MVR) check.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a school, childcare, or institutional kitchen is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve meals and snacks in accordance with approved menus, portion requirements, and program standards.
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, and organized kitchen and food service environment.
  • Follow safe food handling practices, including proper storage, preparation, labeling, and monitoring of food temperatures.
  • Transport food to assigned Head Start centers using approved containers and procedures.
  • Assist with family-style meal service and cleanup and support children during mealtime as needed.
  • Follow documented special dietary needs, food allergies, and substitutions accurately and consistently.
  • Work with the Nutrition Manager and kitchen staff to support menu implementation, meal preparation, and effective food service operations.
  • Maintain required food service documentation, including temperature, sanitation, production, and inventory records.
  • Maintain required food safety training and certifications and follow applicable licensing, health department, and Head Start requirements.
