The Cook is responsible for assisting the Lead Cook in coordinating meal preparation, assisting with kitchen and cafeteria activities, and maintains a clean and safe environment. Administered by the U.S. Department of Labor, Gulfport Job Corps Center is a part of the nation's largest career technical training and education program. This schedule for this position will include working evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Training in food preparation and 1-year experience.
  • Must be able to obtain a Food Handler’s certificate within 30 days of employment.
  • Successfully pass any background check and/drug test required on the contract.
  • Ability to obtain & maintain valid Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare vegetables by washing, peeling, coring, grinding, shredding, or chopping, for use in entrees.
  • Prepare meats for cooking by washing, trimming, boning, cutting, cubing, or forming into patties or loaves.
  • Cook or bake items, which require minimum preparation.
  • Help cook and serve meals, ensuring that prepared foods are held and served at proper temperatures, and all left over foods are properly chilled and stored.
  • Keep food service area, tables, floors, and equipment clean and sanitary.
  • Prepare desserts as needed.
  • Assist with the appropriate storage of dry goods and freezer items.
  • Maintain accountability of students and property; adhere to safety practices and OSHA standards.
  • Helps supervise work-based learning program to include the development of student's employability, social skills and Career Success Standards while in the Food Service area.
