About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking a Cook responsible for planning, preparing, and serving meals as needed for Corps and Shelter programming. This role involves managing food resources, supervising volunteers, ensuring kitchen safety and sanitation according to Public Health Department regulations, and collaborating with various departments to plan menus and determine food product usage. The Cook will also be responsible for gathering grab-and-go items for the shelter program and performing other assigned duties related to the meal program.

Requirements

  • An understanding and acceptance of The Salvation Army’s mission, philosophy, and practices.
  • Experience as a cook, in menu planning, purchasing, and food service.
  • Ability to accurately figure the costs of meals.
  • Ability to work independently with good judgment.
  • Current food handlers certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Plan nutritious meals using donated food, commodities, or purchased items.
  • Handle the purchasing of food as needed.
  • Supervise volunteers as kitchen helpers and servers.
  • Oversee the cleaning of the kitchen to ensure compliance with Public Health Department regulations.
  • Ensure the kitchen is maintained in a safe manner.
  • Oversee the proper storage of food and supplies.
  • Work with the Shelter Supervisor to plan meals for special events and monthly menus.
  • Work with the Social Services Director to determine what product may be used for the program.
  • Responsible for gathering/purchasing grab-and-go breakfast items, snacks, and easy-to-make lunch items for the shelter program.
  • Perform any other duties related to the running of the meal program that may be assigned.
