About The Position

This position is responsible for planning, preparing, cooking, and serving nutritional meals and snacks in accordance with established guidelines and schedules. It also involves cleaning kitchen facilities, equipment, and appliances, and maintaining an inventory of kitchen supplies and food in a neat and orderly manner. The role requires knowledge of proper cooking methods, meal planning, and food storage techniques. The cook must be able to prepare nutritional, tasteful, and safe food for large groups in a timely manner, properly clean kitchen appliances and utensils, and order food and supplies economically while maintaining adequate inventory levels. The ability to meet attendance requirements, read, write, and communicate in English, and to cook, taste, and smell food are also essential. Duties typically involve frequent walking, standing, kneeling, or squatting, with periods of sitting. Work is performed in a normal kitchen environment with potential discomforts from hot stoves/ovens or cold freezers.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent, AND One year experience cooking food for large groups OR Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Valid State Driver’s License
  • Ability to meet Salvation Army driving requirements for insurance purposes and remain qualified to drive a Salvation Army vehicle throughout the course of employment in this position.
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
  • Ability to cook, taste, and smell food.

  • Maintaining inventory of kitchen supplies and food in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Cleaning, cooking, and preparing a variety of foods and beverages utilizing kitchen equipment, utensils, and supplies in accordance with acceptable and economical cooking methods.
  • Serving food and beverages in a presentable manner; prepares plates for infants or persons requiring additional assistance.
  • Driving a Salvation Army vehicle to pick up food and supplies as needed.
