About The Position

Island Crisis Care Society (ICCS) has been operating since 1989 with a mission to support the most vulnerable in our community. They aim to meet individuals in need where they are, without judgment, and restore hope, dignity, and community connections. ICCS is growing with new programs while remaining faithful to its founding mission: “Provide shelter and care to those in need, reflecting the love of God in loving one another”. The organization seeks to build an inclusive team that reflects the diverse community and upholds the core values of care, compassion, and heart, rooted in its faith-centered origins. The Cook is a key member of the program team, working under the direction of the Food Services Coordinator to provide nutritionally balanced meals and snacks to program participants, contributing to the ICCS mission.

Requirements

  • Grade 10, plus graduation from a program in institutional or residential quantity cooking.
  • One (1) year recent related experience. Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Possesses some knowledge or has an interest in learning more regarding substance use disorders, mental health challenges, treatment, and recovery and is familiar with and understands the "Housing First" model and the importance of bio-psycho-social-spiritual support in addressing these challenges.
  • Follows and practices protocols and procedures consistently and faithfully and maintains effective routines.
  • Has a firm awareness of and maintains healthy boundaries and practices and demonstrates self-care.
  • Is able to understand and contribute to the therapeutic culture of ICCS within their own position and team.
  • Has a demonstrated ability to manage and balance role responsibilities and interpersonal dynamics in a fast paced, high-pressure environment.

Responsibilities

  • Works with the Food Services Coordinator to develop a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu plan in accordance with accepted nutritional guidelines such as Canada’s Food Guide for Healthy Eating and the individual dietary needs of the clients.
  • Prepares, cooks and serves meals and snacks, including those for special dietary needs and special occasions, in accordance with safety and health standards and the menu plan.
  • Oversees the operation of the eating and cooking facilities and equipment and ensures their cleanliness and maintenance. Reviews the meal preparation needs of the organization. Purchases equipment to meet those needs within approved budget limits. Maintains an inventory of all related equipment.
  • Purchases and orders food items necessary for the preparation of meals. Ensures that purchases are within approved budget limits. Maintains an inventory of food and other related items. Stores food items.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
