About The Position

This position is an important community outreach role serving seniors in Whitman County. The Cook – Sr. Nutrition Program serves as the lead cook for multiple senior congregate meal sites and is responsible for preparing meals at predetermined sites with commercial/industrial kitchens. The Cook works closely with the Program Coordinator – Sr. Nutrition Program to ensure approved menus are followed and meals are prepared and served in a safe, sanitary, and timely manner.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred (or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience).
  • One year of institutional, commercial, school, healthcare, senior nutrition, or high-volume food service cooking experience preferred.
  • Experience working in a commercial/industrial kitchen strongly preferred.
  • Valid Washington State Food Worker Card required for food workers handling unpackaged food, food equipment/utensils, or food-contact surfaces (or obtain within the timeframe allowed by Washington law and local health requirements, with employer-provided training as applicable).
  • Must maintain required food worker credentials and comply with all applicable food safety training and documentation requirements.
  • Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record required.
  • This position includes driving between meal sites and other program locations in Whitman County as an essential job function.

Nice To Haves

  • Senior nutrition, school nutrition, hospital, long-term care, or community meal program experience.
  • Experience with batch cooking and production for group meal service.
  • Experience training or directing volunteers in meal service tasks.
  • Experience with food temperature logs, sanitation logs, and meal production records.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook meals in accordance with approved menus, recipes, production schedules, portion standards, and program guidelines.
  • Prepare meals for service at assigned congregate meal sites and coordinate meal timing to meet scheduled service times.
  • Drive between assigned congregate meal sites and other program locations to support meal preparation, meal service, and the transport of approved food, supplies, and equipment as part of daily operations.
  • Ensure food is prepared, held, transported (if applicable), and served using safe food handling practices and required temperature controls.
  • Monitor food quality, appearance, taste, and portion consistency.
  • Maintain safe and sanitary food preparation, storage, service, and warewashing areas at all times.
  • Follow Washington State food safety rules and site procedures for handwashing, cross-contamination prevention, cleaning/sanitizing, and safe hot/cold holding.
  • Use and maintain food thermometers and complete required temperature checks/logs.
  • Properly label, date, store, and rotate food items using site procedures (including FIFO practices, where applicable).
  • Comply with employee illness reporting requirements and exclusion/restriction rules for food workers.
