About The Position
Pacific Community Resources Society (PCRS) is a large not-for-profit agency that serves some of the most vulnerable people in our communities from Vancouver to Hope. We work with youth and vulnerable adults in the areas of education, employment, housing, substance use and mental health, and youth and family support services. We are CARF Accredited and a Certified Living Wage Employer. Honour Secondary School (HSS) is an independent secondary school in Surrey serving youth in Grades 10–12 who benefit from an alternative educational setting. HSS offers a comprehensive academic program within a small, supportive learning environment that emphasizes individualized instruction, flexibility, and strong relationships. The program is designed to create a safe, engaging space where students can re-engage with their education, build academic confidence, and develop positive skills and behaviours that support long-term success. HSS also provides targeted support to address barriers to learning and works collaboratively with justice, community, and partners to support student stability and positive educational outcomes. The Cook oversees all food programs offered out of a busy youth centre. They are responsible for planning, preparing and providing a nutritional meal program four days a week for school and centre. With a sound understanding of the Canada Food Guide and the importance of nutrition in youth development, the cook incorporates a variety of cultural foods while maintaining nutritional standards. The Cook will also be responsible for purchasing groceries, maintaining inventory and ensuring the kitchen and work space meets health authority cleanliness and safety standards.
Requirements
- Professional Cook Level One certification, or formal culinary experience/training
- Budget management
- Ability to operate independently

Responsibilities
- Provides healthy, nutritious meals for participants
- Plans menus, incorporating diverse and local cultural foods, with flexibility
- Plans, purchases and manages food inventory; reconciling petty cash purchases
- Maintains kitchen documentation and records for reporting, maintaining health authority safety standards including sanitation and food temperatures
- Provides training and supervision to participants working in the kitchen, maintaining good safety practices using a preventative approach; training includes kitchen health and safety skills, knife safety, kitchen communication, cleaning procedures, equipment safety, professional food safety and basic cooking methods.
- Provides strengths-based feedback to participants to encourage learning and growth while maintain kitchen safety
- Provides food support and consultation surrounding special events
- Maintains responsibility for regular kitchen and equipment cleaning
- Handles emergency situations safely and in accordance with agency policy and procedures
- Works closely with leadership and JOSH committee or representatives to ensure kitchen and food safety
- Communicates effectively with coworkers and staff and participates in team efforts
- Participates on committees, working groups, and associations as required
- Develops community networks relevant to managed services
- Acts as a resource for food programs throughout the site
