About The Position

The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking to hire a Cook I for the Anna Veterans’ Home. This position performs food preparation and cooking duties within the Dietary Unit, including preparing meals on a large scale to meet the needs of residents on regular and therapeutic diets. The Cook I plays an important role in supporting the health, safety, and daily care of Illinois Veterans by ensuring meals are prepared in accordance with established dietary standards, sanitation requirements, and facility procedures. Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school and six (6) months of cooking experience which provides working knowledge of food preparation and cooking methods on a large-scale basis.
  • Requires possession of a valid Food Service Sanitation Certificate issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health, or requires possession of a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certification from a program accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Conference for Food Protection (CFP).

  • Qualifying state employees, in the employee Upward Mobility Program, may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated requirements for this classification.

Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, prepares and cooks on a quantity scale basis for individuals and staff of the Anna Veterans Home.
  • Operates standard cooking equipment such as mixing machines, steam cookers, toasters, food choppers, bake ovens, steam kettles.
  • Assists in the inspection of the kitchen to verify the kitchen is equipped with the necessary supplies and needed food.
  • Serves resident meals in dining rooms according to menu, diet, and as selected by the resident and or guest while maintaining portion control, good plate presentation, as well as following all sanitation practices and regulations.
  • Assists in the receiving, handling, and storage of food items checks kitchen and storage spaces to see that supplies and cleaning gear are ordered and on hand to meet requirements during work shift.
  • Completes all Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) mandatory training requirements, safety programs and participates in education workshops to maintain profession and competency.
  • Oversees supplies and equipment in absence of higher authority.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
