Under the direction of the Cook II and above, the Cook I handles, prepares, and serves food for Beach Shops retail dining operations. The role primarily works with student employees and fosters a learning environment through training, leadership, and mentoring. The position follows food safety, health, OSHA, and company procedures; maintains food quality and safe storage; keeps work areas and equipment clean and sanitized; and receives, inspects, and stocks supplies. The employee also maintains records to help determine food preparation quantities and follows campus and company sustainability initiatives, including food waste management. Opportunities for growth may include performing Cook II duties and continuing to master cooking skills. Shifts are assigned during Retail Dining operating hours Monday through Sunday and may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, or nights. The schedule follows the CSULB Academic Calendar, with peak activity during academic semesters and reduced hours during breaks depending on operational needs. Occasional support for campus and organizational events may be required, including evenings and weekends. The employee must be available to work at least 20 hours during the academic semester, although actual hours depend on activity and some weeks may have little or no scheduled work. The position is primarily in a dining-services and kitchen environment that can be busy and confined, with temperatures ranging from climate-controlled dining areas to hot, humid kitchen areas and cold refrigeration areas. Work may also take place outdoors. The work environment has moderate-to-loud noise and exposure to ovens, grills, knives and other cutlery, and cleaning and sanitizing chemicals. Physical demands include standing and moving throughout shifts, manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination, frequently lifting or moving at least 50 pounds, and using upper-body strength. The employee may also need to sit, climb, balance, bend, push or pull, reach above shoulder level, stoop, and kneel. This is a union position. The employee must be at least 18 years old and have a California Food Handler Card or be able to obtain one within the first 30 days of employment. A high school diploma or equivalent and two years of cook experience in a fast-paced quick-serve restaurant are preferred.
