About The Position

This position is for a Cook/Baker at Ohio County Middle School, classified as Job Class #7241. The role requires 5 hours of work per day for 181 days a year. The primary goal is to prepare and serve tasty, attractive, and nutritious meals to students in an efficient, clean, and friendly environment. The job involves a broad knowledge base of quantity food service, sanitation, safety practices, recipe adjustment, equipment care, and basic math/cashiering skills. Essential functions include preparing and cooking various foods, operating kitchen equipment, adhering to health regulations, lifting, bending, and standing, and maintaining records. Performance responsibilities include baking goods, cooking main dishes and other food items, maintaining cleanliness and safety standards, preparing food according to menus and recipes, understanding serving sizes for USDA requirements, assisting with inventory and storage, participating in clean-up, assisting with special meal functions, engaging in training, promoting good nutrition, and performing other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED Certificate
  • Good general health, and strong back capable of heavy lifting
  • One year experience in cooking and baking food in large quantities.
  • Demonstrate or develop skills in food preparation, reading and following institutional recipes.
  • Demonstrate or develop skills in the use and care of institutional equipment.
  • Must meet the requirement of 702 KAR 6:045 which prescribes the necessary qualifications and training of beginning school food service employees.
  • Has met health requirements as specified in district personnel policy.
  • Ability to prepare, cook, bake and serve a variety of foods in quantity at an assigned food service facility.
  • Ability to prepare and serve food in accordance with health and sanitation regulations.
  • Ability to operate and maintain standard machines and equipment found in school cafeterias and kitchens.
  • Ability to prepare attractive, appetizing and nutritious meals for students and staff.
  • Ability to lift, bend, reach and stand.
  • Ability to follow, adjust and extend recipes.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and bakes rolls, biscuits, breads, cakes, cookies and other baked goods.
  • Prepares and cooks meat dishes, vegetables and other main dishes; prepares salads, sandwiches, fruit, soup, sauces and other foods.
  • Maintains the highest standards of safety and cleanliness in the kitchen; cleans equipment, utensils, and appliances as needed.
  • Prepares food according to a planned menu and tested, uniform recipes, and determines if the finished product is of best quality both in flavor and appearance before it is served.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of serving sizes to meet the USDA requirements with regard to the ages of the School Meal Pattern.
  • Assists in maintaining the perpetual inventories.
  • Assumes responsibility for proper storage and disposal of unused foods.
  • Assists in the daily clean up of the kitchen and service areas.
  • Performs related duties at special meal functions, such as banquets, when needed.
  • Participates in planned training programs.
  • Assumes and carries out such other task as may be assigned by the manager, principal, and/or school food service director.
