About The Position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for the strategic leadership, operational management, and performance of hospice services across the organization. The COO ensures the delivery of high-quality, compassionate end-of-life care while maintaining regulatory compliance, financial sustainability, and operational excellence. Working closely with the CEO and/or Board and executive leadership team, the COO translates the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic goals into effective operational plans and systems. The COO oversees clinical and administrative operations, ensuring efficient service delivery and a culture focused on patient-centered care.

Requirements

  • 5–10+ years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare operations.
  • Experience in hospice, palliative care, home health, or post-acute care strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading large interdisciplinary teams.
  • Strong knowledge of hospice regulations and Medicare reimbursement.
  • Operational and financial management expertise.
  • Strategic leadership and organizational development skills.
  • Excellent communication and decision-making abilities.
  • Deep commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of hospice programs including home hospice, inpatient hospice, and palliative care services.
  • Ensure efficient workflow, staffing models, and service delivery across all departments.
  • Develop and implement operational policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the CEO and/or Board and executive team to develop and execute organizational strategy.
  • Translate strategic initiatives into operational plans with measurable goals.
  • Lead growth initiatives, service expansion, and program development.
  • Ensure hospice services meet all federal, state, and accreditation standards (CMS, Medicare Conditions of Participation, etc.).
  • Maintain compliance with healthcare regulations and quality standards.
  • Monitor quality metrics, patient outcomes, and satisfaction.
  • Partner with finance leadership to develop and manage operating budgets.
  • Monitor operational performance, cost control, and revenue cycle performance.
  • Ensure financial sustainability while maintaining high-quality care.
  • Lead, mentor, and support department directors and operational leaders.
  • Promote a culture of compassion, accountability, and teamwork.
  • Oversee recruitment, retention, and professional development of staff.
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for operational success.
  • Implement quality improvement initiatives and performance monitoring systems.
  • Ensure patient and family satisfaction remains a top priority.
  • Work closely with clinical leaders, medical directors, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Provide operational updates to the CEO and Board of Directors.
  • Foster strong relationships with community partners, hospitals, and referral sources.
