About The Position

Performs routine unskilled work at the landfill convenience site, including assisting customers, directing waste disposal, and maintaining a clean and safe environment. Serves as a primary point of contact for the public by providing clear instructions on proper disposal procedures and ensuring compliance with site rules. Monitors incoming materials for permitted waste and helps maintain efficient traffic flow within the facility. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions with a focus on safety and customer service under the direct supervision of the Landfill Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to direct the activities of others working extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to ensure that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
  • Hearing/Speaking Perceive nature of sounds by ear. Necessary to converse with supervisor, employees, and the public in person.
  • Visual Abilities Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see vehicles from a distance as they approach. Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see work related business close at hand. Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships to see objects where and as they are. Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area. Accommodation – Must be able to adjust the eye lensto bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from the eye.
  • Physical Strength – Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements usually require walking, standing, bending, lifting, climbing, reaching, stooping, and stretching. There is significant use of arms, hands, legs, and feet. A negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Reasoning Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to practical situations and programs encountered in the day-to-day activities of the position. To comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an expedient manner and at times under emergency conditions. Good judgement is required.
  • Mathematic Ability Ability to use numbers to complete daily log reports.
  • Language Ability Ability to speak, read, write and comprehend the English Language are required for this position. Writing Ability Ability to write documentation associated with the job that could be used in reports. Spoken Ability Ability to be conversant in voice and dictation to convey ideas. Be conversant with supervisors and the public. Must sometimes be forceful in the enforcement of landfill rules and/or policies.

Responsibilities

  • Provides courteous, face-to-face customer service through clear verbal communication.
  • Assists and directs customers to proper waste disposal areas.
  • Inspects incoming materials to ensure compliance with permitted waste guidelines, redirects non-compliant materials appropriately.
  • Directs and controls incoming and outgoing traffic to maintain safe and efficient flow within the facility.
  • Maintains cleanliness of disposal areas, including sweeping and general upkeep around containers.
  • Enforces site rules, including prohibiting scavenging, and educates customers on proper disposal procedures.
  • Performs janitorial and general cleanup duties as assigned.
  • Assists with instructing temporary workers on daily tasks and ensures work is completed safely and efficiently.
  • Collects litter on and around landfill property to maintain a clean environment.
  • Follows all OSHA regulations and City safety policies to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Conducts routine vehicle and equipment inspections to meet state and federal requirements.
  • Assists with operations at other locations as needed.
  • Works extended hours, including during adverse weather and emergency events, as required.
  • Must be able to complete other assigned tasks as needed such as delivering deposits, monitoring temporary workers, and gathering materials
