About The Position

As a Controls Technician III, you'll operate as a journeyman-level expert in commercial building automation and controls. With strong proficiency across DDC systems, sensors, actuators, controllers, and integration with HVAC equipment, you'll independently lead complex service calls, perform advanced diagnostics and repairs, ensure optimal system performance, and mentor junior technicians. This senior field role demands technical mastery, safety leadership, and a commitment to delivering reliable, energy-efficient controls solutions in commercial, institutional, and industrial environments.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of progressive hands-on experience in building automation/controls installation, startup, troubleshooting, and service; proven journeyman-level proficiency in handling complex tasks independently.
  • High school diploma or GED required; associate degree, trade school certificate, or technical training in HVAC, controls, electronics, or related field strongly preferred.
  • EPA Section 608 certification (Universal required).
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
  • Advanced diagnostic and troubleshooting skills across commercial controls and HVAC systems.
  • Proficiency with controls tools, gauges, multimeters, and specialized test equipment.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, sequences of operation, and technical documentation.
  • Excellent customer service, communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Leadership mindset with the ability to mentor junior technicians and ensure team safety and quality.
  • Safety leadership and the ability to work independently in high-pressure situations.

Nice To Haves

  • NATE certification or manufacturer-specific training preferred.
  • OSHA 30-hour certification encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Independently diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain complex building automation systems, DDC controls, sensors, actuators, valves, and integration with HVAC equipment.
  • Perform advanced startups, functional testing, system balancing, calibration, and commissioning to verify performance and compliance with specifications.
  • Lead full service and retrofit calls from start to finish: assess on-site issues, communicate clearly with customers, coordinate parts and materials, execute work, and follow up for satisfaction.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance, system optimization, and energy-efficiency assessments to reduce downtime and improve performance.
  • Ensure all work complies with EPA regulations, building codes, manufacturer specifications, and Modigent safety and quality standards.
  • Document service activities thoroughly (work orders, reports, photos, as-builts, recommendations) and maintain accurate records.
  • Mentor and guide Controls Technician I and II team members by demonstrating advanced techniques, sharing best practices, and supporting on-the-job learning and safety adherence.
  • Maintain clean, organized work areas, vehicles, tools, and PPE; adhere to all safety protocols and company standards.
