About The Position

As a Controls Technician I, you'll begin your career in commercial building automation and controls by assisting experienced technicians with basic installation, startup, troubleshooting, and maintenance of DDC systems, sensors, actuators, controllers, and integration with HVAC equipment in office buildings, hospitals, schools, and industrial facilities. Under close supervision, you'll gain hands-on experience with entry-level tasks while learning to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient controls solutions that support sustainable building performance. Requirements

  • Experience: 0–3 years in construction, labor, mechanical, electrical, facilities maintenance, or related field; no prior controls/HVAC experience required—strong mechanical/electrical aptitude, eagerness to learn, and positive attitude essential.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; associate degree, trade school certificate, or technical training in HVAC, controls, electronics, or related field preferred.
  • Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver's license and clean driving record required; OSHA 10-hour certification encouraged.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use tools/equipment for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Primarily field-based in commercial/industrial settings (indoor/outdoor, rooftops, mechanical rooms, varying weather); exposure to noise, dust, heights, electrical hazards, and extreme temperatures; must strictly adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, and steel-toed boots at all times—safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position. Occasional regional travel within assigned market or on-call rotations may be required as business needs dictate.
  • Basic mechanical/electrical aptitude and tool familiarity (multimeter, hand tools, basic wiring).
  • Safety awareness, attention to detail, and willingness to follow instructions and learn quickly.
  • Customer service orientation, clear communication, and teamwork.
  • Basic documentation (work orders, photos, notes) and smartphone/tablet proficiency for digital reporting.
  • Valid driver's license; ability to pass background/drug screening and maintain clean driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Assist senior technicians with installation, wiring, termination, and startup of building automation systems, DDC controls, sensors, actuators, valves, and related HVAC controls equipment.
  • Support basic troubleshooting, calibration, and preventive maintenance under direct guidance to ensure optimal system performance and energy efficiency.
  • Help read and interpret blueprints, schematics, sequences of operation, control diagrams, and technical documentation to execute accurate work.
  • Perform general service call support: prepare tools/parts, document findings, take photos, and complete basic work order entries.
  • Maintain clean, organized work areas, vehicles, and tools; load/unload equipment and materials as needed.
  • Participate fully in daily safety briefings, job hazard analyses, toolbox talks, and follow all safety protocols and PPE requirements.
  • Actively learn controls platforms (e.g., BACnet, LON, Tridium/Niagara, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell), sequences of operation, and industry best practices through on-the-job training, ride-alongs, and assigned coursework.
  • Communicate professionally with customers and team members, reporting observations and asking questions to build knowledge.
