About The Position

Join our Utilities and Engineering Services team within Facilities and Business Operations as a Controls Specialist III, where you will play a pivotal role in providing advanced technical expertise in the installation, retro-commissioning, troubleshooting, repair, and programming of Building Automation Systems (BAS) and ancillary electronic equipment essential to controlling campus HVAC systems. This position requires expert-level knowledge and a strong understanding of BAS control concepts, practices, and theories, along with the ability to effectively apply that expertise in a hands-on, operational environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 6+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219(6).
  • Position requires a valid Class E driver’s license.
  • The position may involve driving to various locations on and off campus to conduct University business.
  • All applicants must be authorized to work for any U.S. employer.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position, and the university cannot accommodate H‑1B transfers or employment-based visa processing for individuals currently sponsored by another employer.

Nice To Haves

  • Extensive experience with building automation systems (BAS) such as Siemens, Johnson Controls, Trane, or similar platforms.
  • Strong programming and troubleshooting skills for HVAC controls, including DDC systems and control sequences.
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing system performance data and implementing energy-efficient or performance-driven solutions.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems, instrumentation, and control devices (e.g., sensors, actuators, meters, relays.)
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and sequences of operations to diagnose and resolve system issues.
  • Experience supporting BAS upgrades, integrations, and modernization projects, including working with third-party contractors.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills, with the ability to work independently on complex systems.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP), Building Commissioning Certification (BCxP) preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Automation/ Building Systems Engineering, Facilities Management or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced analysis, programming, installation, calibration, and repair of building automation systems (BAS) and related HVAC control components to ensure optimal system performance.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain control devices such as sensors, actuators, relays, airflow stations, and utility meters, ensuring accurate operation and continuous system commissioning.
  • Design, develop, and enhance digital control systems using data analysis and performance trends to improve efficiency and support Facilities Performance Indicators (FPIs)
  • Update and maintain BAS infrastructure, including front-end graphics, programming, databases, and network configurations.
  • Identify system issues, recommend improvements, and support modernization efforts for building automation systems across campus.
  • Collaborate with contractors and internal departments to implement system changes, ensuring proper integration and functionality.
  • Review and optimize sequences of operation, developing technical solutions that align system performance with operational and business needs.
