About The Position

This role involves assisting Corporate Engineering with the development, installation, and commissioning of new projects, and setting standards, recommendations, and strategies aligned with the organization's vision. The Controls Manager will design, implement, maintain, and optimize automation and control systems within the dairy manufacturing facility, ensuring these systems support safe, efficient, and high-quality production. Key responsibilities include collaborating with engineering, operations, and maintenance for continuous improvement and regulatory compliance, developing specifications for systems like instruments, PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA software, and analyzing engineering documents to meet project goals. The role also entails directing installation activities, evaluating field installations, managing controls-related capital projects (scope, budget, execution), reviewing submittals and onsite project progress, and overseeing the supply and installation of controls systems. Collaboration with cross-functional teams for process improvements and equipment upgrades, managing external vendor relationships, staying current with industry trends, reviewing vendor progress reports, and developing action plans are also crucial. The position involves participating in the development of startup and commissioning documents, training plant operational staff, and planning, supervising, and overseeing all phases of controls maintenance, repair, and calibration. Specific technical duties include PLC and MMI programming and troubleshooting. The manager will lead the electrical and controls team, managing budgets, personnel, and objectives, and developing cost estimates for control projects. Vendor management, including selection, scheduling, and quality control, is essential. Maintaining electrical and control systems documentation, ensuring safe performance of duties by staff, and complying with OSHA, food safety regulations (SQF, FDA, PMO) are also key aspects of the role. The position requires utilizing lean manufacturing principles and adhering to the company's non-negotiables.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree or U.S. equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field, plus 5 years of professional experience as an Electrical Engineer, Controls Engineer, or any occupation/job title/position involving industrial automation and control systems, including PLCs and HMI/MMI systems.
  • In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree plus 5 years of experience, the employer will accept 7 years of professional experience as an Electrical Engineer, Controls Engineer, or any occupation/job title/position involving industrial automation and control systems, including PLCs and HMI/MMI systems.
  • 5 years of professional experience performing design, programming, installation, and maintenance of industrial automation and control systems, including PLCs and HMI/MMI systems.
  • 5 years of professional experience designing, developing, installing, and maintaining industrial control systems, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interface (HMI/MMI) systems, and plant automation software.
  • 5 years of professional experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings, electrical schematics, specifications, and technical manuals to develop project scopes, criteria, and installation requirements.
  • 5 years of professional experience programming and troubleshooting PLC and HMI/MMI systems for manufacturing or production environments.
  • 5 years of professional experience directing and coordinating the installation, commissioning, and modification of control and electrical systems of food manufacturing machines to ensure conformance with engineering design and specifications.
  • 5 years of professional experience managing vendors and contractors (including selection, scheduling, cost estimation, and quality control for control system projects).
  • 5 years of professional experience supervising controls and electrical maintenance teams, including hiring, training, scheduling, and ensuring compliance with OSHA and other applicable safety, health, and food safety standards (including Safe Quality Foods, FDA, and PMO).

Responsibilities

  • Assist Corporate Engineering with the development, installation, and commissioning of a new project.
  • Assist corporate engineering team with setting out standards, recommendations and strategies to align with strategic vision of the organization.
  • Design, implement, maintain and optimize automation and control systems across the dairy manufacturing facility.
  • Ensure that all controls systems support safe, efficient and high quality production processes.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, operations and maintenance to drive continuous improvement and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Develop scope and criteria for designs of systems such as instruments, PLCs, HMI, SCADA and controls software in the manufacturing environment.
  • Research and analyze data such as engineering documents, design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine acceptability for project team goals.
  • Direct and coordinate installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and specifications.
  • Evaluate field installations and recommend design modifications to align systems with project design criteria and goals.
  • Manage controls related capital projects, including scope development budgeting, and execution.
  • Review submittts, work progress and makes recommendations as part of engineering projects that take place onsite.
  • Review the supply and installation of controls systems, ensuring compliance with design documents and company standards.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to support process improvements and equipment upgrades.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors and integrators.
  • Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies in automation and controls.
  • Receive and review job progress reports from vendors and develop daily and weekly action plans.
  • Participate in the development of startup and commissioning documents and training of plant operational staff.
  • Plan, supervise and oversee all phases of controls maintenance, repair, and calibration.
  • Responsible for PLC decoding and programming, as well as MMI programming.
  • Manage electrical and controls team activities, including budgeting, management of personnel and achievement of objectives.
  • Develop materials and cost estimates for control projects, evaluating technical specifications and performance criteria.
  • Manage vendors to include selection, scheduling, and quality.
  • Maintain electrical and control systems documentation such as backups, manuals, PLC programs, and drawings.
  • Ensure the safe performance of duties by electrical and controls staff; comply with all OSHA regulations, maintaining appropriate documentation.
  • Utilize lean manufacturing principles to drive zero losses and uphold the culture of MWC’s non-negotiables.
  • Comply with occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations, and orders issued pursuant to the Occupational Safety and Health Act which are applicable to his/her own actions and conduct.
  • Comply with all applicable food safety regulations and mandates (Safe Quality Foods, Food and Drug Admin, Pasteurized Milk Ordinance).
