About The Position

Controls Engineers design, develop, install, and maintain equipment used to monitor and control systems, equipment, and processes. This role applies expertise in advanced process control, instrumentation, distributed control systems, PLCs, and SCADA systems to develop solutions for customer needs. The position focuses on power chain monitoring and control systems in data centers and other mission-critical environments, including Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), field-device configuration, and Building Automation Systems (BAS). The engineer assists with design and engineering, programming, testing, troubleshooting, deployment, commissioning, and maintenance of SCADA and automation systems. The role is based in Ashburn, Virginia, may involve approximately 25% out-of-town travel, and requires U.S. citizenship.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering and 2–5 years of field experience; alternatively, an associate degree in an electrical or mechanical field with three additional years of field experience, or a high school diploma with five additional years of field experience.
  • 2–5 years of experience designing and servicing controls systems for switchgear, substations, metering, and SCADA/fault data/SER/integration-automation equipment installation and testing.
  • Experience reading electrical and control schematics.
  • Experience with EPMS startup, configuration, and calibration.
  • Experience testing and troubleshooting control and protection systems.
  • Experience using basic electrical and hand tools, as well as testing, calibration, or industry-specific tools and software.
  • Experience testing and verifying voltage and current inputs to relays; verifying local and SCADA metering and alarms; calibrating relays; performing local and SCADA trip testing; and verifying function switches.
  • Experience with three-phase power systems, power-system protection and control schemes, test equipment, and test-equipment software.
  • Experience with OT and IT networking technologies and topologies, and troubleshooting OT and IT networks and protocols.
  • Experience with CAD/CAE software such as Visio or AutoCAD.
  • Experience with schedule-management software such as Microsoft Project or Primavera P6.
  • Experience with standard office software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Certification in one or more PLC or automation platforms, such as Niagara N4, Schneider Power Monitoring, Rockwell, Siemens, JCI, or Eaton Foreseer.
  • Certification in one or more SCADA platforms, such as Iconics, Ignition, or Aveva.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including extended computer use and sitting, reaching, finger dexterity, listening, speaking, reading, and applying general rules to specific problems.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check, drug screening, and motor vehicle record review; positions requiring driving require an MVR meeting company and insurance carrier standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) certification.
  • Certified SCADA Security Architect (CSSA) certification.
  • Certified Automation Professional (CAP) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Assist senior engineers with SCADA and automation design documents, including narratives, requirements analysis, Sequence of Operations and system functional documentation, subsystem designs, and comment resolution.
  • Review third-party SCADA and automation design documents, perform scope-gap analysis, check designs for project compliance, assist with reviewing project specifications, and help create integrated systems factory-testing plans and procedures.
  • Program, configure, and troubleshoot controllers, PLCs, RTUs, VFDs, and/or HMI systems.
  • Assist senior engineers in creating and updating testing and commissioning procedures; prepare test reports; originate test procedures; commission deployed systems; and develop test equipment and simulation devices.
  • Perform factory and field testing.
  • Troubleshoot existing and legacy systems during service calls and perform hardware and software upgrades and replacements.
  • Test, verify, and calibrate relay inputs, metering, alarms, function switches, and trip functions, including local and SCADA verification.
