Our Data Center infrastructure solutions business provides innovative and cost-effective solutions for building faster, smarter, and more resilient data centers. We offer modular infrastructure solutions that scale AI and cloud computing capacity while minimizing capital risk and deployment delays. Our approach standardizes components and utilizes controlled offsite environments for labor, reducing costs, improving lead times, and lowering construction risk while ensuring quality and global repeatability. SLB is seeking a motivated Controls & Instrument Engineer to support the Engineering Lead and Product Engineering Manager. This role is accountable for the electrical scope and systems in large-scale data centers throughout the design, construction, assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning phases. The Controls & Instrument Engineer will be responsible for checking and approving drawings/designs, managing interface communication, and ensuring the accuracy, reliability, efficiency, and safety of the electrical scope of work for Hyperscale Data Center Modules meets customer requirements and Industrial Standards. The engineer will play a critical role in supporting the plant during the manufacturing stage and assisting stakeholders in troubleshooting site installation and commissioning problems. Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Controls Engineering from a recognized university.
  • 3 to 10 years of experience in controls and instrument design and engineering, with a focus on data center infrastructure.
  • Ability to produce drawings/sketches to illustrate designs/ideas.
  • General knowledge and direct experience with the construction, operation, and maintenance of data center or building electrical systems.
  • Experience with high-density data centers and hyperscale environments.
  • Understanding the purpose of control systems for data center facility modules.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, codes, and regulations, including but not limited to API, ASME, ANSI, IEC, IBC, ISA, OSHA, NEC, and NFPA.
  • Experience working with computer-aided design (CAD) and building information modeling (BIM) software.
  • Experience with fast-track design/build projects and multiple significant upgrade projects.
  • Ability to review P&IDs and related control systems for complex process equipment.
  • Working knowledge of control valves, relief valves, and flow measurement devices.
  • Working knowledge of ISA guidelines and symbols for instrumentation.
  • Working knowledge of API and ANSI guidelines.
  • Ability to offer alternate instrument or valve types from perspectives of cost, space, schedule, operation, and maintenance.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical equipment and system design within data centers that drive or affect the electrical scope.
  • Direct experience in negotiating with regulatory agencies regarding departures from code and achieving design approval and permitting.
  • Mastery knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint) and PDF Editor (Adobe, Foxit, or equivalent).
  • Operational knowledge in SAP (ERP Tool w/ Engineering Modules and Transactions), Solid Works, Autodesk Revit, Autodesk BIM 360, Autodesk AutoCAD, Navisworks Manager / Freedom.
  • Fluency, both written and verbal, in English.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Responsibilities

  • Checking and approving drawings, information, and documentation to meet Industrial standards and code for the manufacturing group and other departments to produce Data Center Infrastructure Modules.
  • Attending and initiating Design and Development Planning and Review sessions to meet customers’ and industry’s needs.
  • Preparing TRs (Technical Requisitions) for electrical systems, Instrument systems, and various components.
  • Reviewing vendor quotations, conducting full technical bid analysis, and providing feedback to the procurement team regarding proposal gaps or compliance with project requirements.
  • Preparing and completing various Controls and Instrument engineering deliverable drawings, documents, and calculations such as instrument list/index, instrument data sheets, control system architecture drawings, alarm schedule, and selecting/specifying all safety and control instruments.
  • Reviewing P&ID, IOM Procedure, Start-Up Procedure, and Control and Shutdown Philosophy to ensure Data Center FAT and Operation are issue-free.
  • Ensuring all major equipment buy-outs are properly specified and purchased to interface seamlessly with the overall system.
  • Preparing control narrative/philosophy.
  • Troubleshooting operation issues during start-up and commissioning of data centers related to control systems and instrumentation.
  • Performing ladder logic programming (if needed), control valve sizing, relief valve sizing, and flow element sizing, and training team members to perform these tasks.
  • Recommending control systems, control valves, level instruments, and flow instruments best suited for the application.
  • Participating in client or internal HAZOP studies.
  • Assisting in providing hookup details to I&E contractors for instrumentation installation.
  • Reviewing and approving subcontractor field instrument and electrical hookup scope, ensuring compliance with client specifications.
  • Preparing bulk MTOs (Material Take Offs) and detailed BOMs (Bill of Materials).
  • Thinking outside the box to find creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs while managing impacts on quality, cost, or schedule.
  • Staying informed of new developments and requirements affecting the organization to recommend changes in programs and applications.
  • Interpreting, organizing, and executing assignments in a self-driven and self-sufficient manner.
  • Making independent decisions on technical problems and methods and representing the organization in meetings to resolve important questions.
  • Applying advanced or state-of-the-art knowledge and experience to resolve crucial issues and/or unique conditions.
  • Staying up-to-date with advancements in electrical engineering and data center technologies and recommending new technologies to improve the reliability and efficiency of the data center product line.
  • Representing the company with customers during review meetings and acting as the primary point of contact for clients, responding to inquiries and concerns professionally.
  • Providing technical support during the construction phase, responding to RFIs and addressing issues.
  • Attending job site visits, project meetings, and commissioning activities as needed.
