About The Position

Our Optical Communications segment has evolved into a comprehensive provider of optical solutions. This role is within the R&D labs and/or pilot operations, providing process/automation controls equipment support from concept to start-up. The position offers customer-focused engineering service to the technical community within S&T.

Requirements

  • BS in Electrical/Power/Automation Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • 1-5 years of controls experience
  • Strong inclination toward machine/process control
  • Software/Controls programming experience with PLC’s, HMI’s (hardware/software), SCADA especially Rockwell, Beckoff
  • Experience with HMI and SCADA systems primarily FT View, Optix
  • Well versed in electrical engineering principles
  • Understanding of PID and advanced control implementation
  • Capability to design, develop and deliver fully integrated machine and motion control, automation, and process machine systems to R&D
  • Understanding of electrical panel layout, schematic design, ladder logic programming, and system testing and troubleshooting. Basic drafting skills
  • Familiarity of logic-based programming. PLC and IEC base programming structure including ladder logic, function blocks, structured text, and sequential flowchart desirable
  • Familiar with Machine Safety Design principles per ISO 13849 -1&2

  • Project management skills (e.g. scoping, budgeting, timelines MS Project)
  • Experience with directing and coordinating trades
  • Ability to lead technical teams as part of a larger project

Responsibilities

  • Design and integrate PLC process and automation controls equipment into research and development environment
  • Provide equipment and process support as needed throughout the facility
  • Specify electrical and control components, wires, cables, and instrumentation
  • Define requirements and produce a scope of work for controls project needs from a variety of sources within R&D to provide the best solution at the best cost and quality
  • Actively participate in all phases of the project including design, fabrication, off-line integration and testing, installation and start-up support
  • Communicate with stakeholders to refine project scope and to share progress toward project milestones
  • Develop system documentation, including machine specifications
  • Identify and lead improvements to existing process/automated control systems
  • Follow electrical safety requirements and equipment safety standards
  • Present technical updates to peers and in public forums
