Controls Engineer I - II - III

Oxylus Energy•Branford, CT
•$80,000 - $110,000•Onsite

About The Position

Oxylus Energy is hiring a Controls Engineer at the Engineer I, II, or III level to own the electronics, sensing, controls, and automation for electrolyzer test stations and balance-of-stack systems. The role involves designing and building experimental systems, selecting sensors, wiring control panels, writing control logic and safety interlocks, and developing data acquisition software. As the company scales, the engineer will integrate electrolyzer stacks with surrounding unit operations, including CO₂ supply and conditioning, gas separation, and water and thermal management. This is a hands-on, on-site role in Branford, Connecticut. The engineer will build, commission, and troubleshoot lab hardware in collaboration with electrochemists, materials scientists, and mechanical engineers. Test stations conduct long experiments involving pressurized and hazardous gases, including CO, making reliable automation and safety systems essential. The hired level will be matched to the candidate’s experience. Candidates must be willing to relocate to the Bridgeport/Stamford area within one year of the start date.

Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Relevant experience by level: Engineer I requires a B.S. with 1–2 years or an M.S. with some relevant experience; internships, co-ops, and hands-on projects count. Engineer II requires a B.S. with 2–4 years or an M.S. with 1–2 years of relevant experience. Engineer III requires a B.S. with 4–6 years, an M.S. with 2–4 years, or a Ph.D. with 0–2 years of relevant experience.
  • Hands-on experience designing, building, and wiring electrical and control systems.
  • Experience programming control or data acquisition systems using PLCs, microcontrollers, Python, or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with industrial instrumentation, sensors, and communication protocols such as Modbus, analog signals, or Ethernet/IP.
  • Ability to read and create electrical schematics and P&IDs (piping and instrumentation diagrams).
  • Strong commitment to safety, especially around pressurized systems and hazardous gases.
  • Attention to detail and strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Good written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Must be willing to relocate to the Bridgeport/Stamford area within one year of the start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience automating test stations for electrolyzers, fuel cells, or batteries.
  • Experience integrating potentiostats or high-current DC power supplies.
  • Familiarity with electrical and safety standards such as NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 79, or UL 508A.
  • Experience with SCADA or HMI development and cloud data pipelines.
  • Experience with process control in chemical or gas-handling systems.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design, build, and maintenance of electronics, sensing, controls, and automation for test stations and balance-of-stack systems.
  • Select and integrate instrumentation, including mass flow controllers, pressure transducers, back-pressure regulators, thermocouples, gas detectors, pumps, valves, and power supplies.
  • Design electrical schematics and control panels; build, wire, and commission them.
  • Develop control software and logic using PLCs, microcontrollers, Python, or similar platforms, including control loops for flow, pressure, temperature, and current.
  • Design and implement safety systems such as interlocks, alarms, emergency shutdowns, and gas-leak detection, and contribute to hazard and safety reviews.
  • Build reliable data acquisition and logging systems and support integration with cloud data infrastructure.
  • Enable unattended, long-duration operation through automated test sequences and remote monitoring.
  • Integrate the electrolyzer stack with other unit operations as systems progress toward pilot scale.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, sensor, and control issues on test stations and keep documentation, drawings, and code up to date.
  • At Engineer III level, set controls architecture and standards across stations, lead system integration for pilot-scale projects, and mentor other engineers.
