Controls Engineer, Power Electronics

Harbinger Motors•Garden Grove, CA

About The Position

Harbinger is an American commercial electric vehicle company developing an EV platform for the medium-duty vehicle market. The Controls Engineer will serve as the technical leader for power electronics control systems within a multidisciplinary engineering team, driving the modeling, development, and validation of embedded controls for high-power solid-state converters and inverters. The role contributes to the reliability and efficiency of the company’s charging and drivetrain systems. The engineer will lead control algorithm development and implementation, design model-based embedded control architectures, and validate controls using hardware-in-the-loop and real-time platforms. The role also oversees the power electronics firmware lifecycle and advances system reliability and quality using Design for Six Sigma methods. Collaboration with battery and integration teams will support fast DC charging protocols and battery management system integration.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in power electronics, solid-state converters, and embedded control systems.
  • Proficiency in model-based design using MATLAB/Simulink, HIL validation using Typhoon, and microcontroller programming using C/C++ and TI C2000.
  • Strong understanding of high-power converter topologies, including DAB and resonant converters, and advanced inverter control strategies.
  • Excellent technical leadership skills and a proven history of managing complex R&D projects and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or Power Electronics, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with megawatt-scale EV charging infrastructure and energy storage control systems.
  • Familiarity with automotive communication protocols such as CAN and J1939, and safety standards such as UL 3141 and IEC 62619.
  • A proven track record of scaling high-voltage power electronics systems (480V+) from initial architecture to production.
  • Advanced certification in Design for Six Sigma (DFSS).

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and implementation of advanced control algorithms for high-power electronics, including AC-DC, DC-DC, AFE, and multi-level inverters.
  • Design model-based embedded control architectures using MATLAB/Simulink and validate them using Typhoon HIL and real-time platforms.
  • Manage and oversee the firmware engineering lifecycle for power electronics, from C/C++ development through hardware-software integration.
  • Drive system reliability and quality improvements across solid-state converter designs using Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodologies.
  • Collaborate with battery and integration teams to implement fast DC charging protocols, including CCS and NACS, and ensure seamless BMS integration.
  • Provide technical leadership for power electronics control systems and multidisciplinary engineering work.
