About The Position

The Controls Engineer works closely with project engineers, project managers, and ESI’s O&M teams to provide industrial control system design for the company’s ongoing biogas utilization projects. The position requires implementing sound engineering principles to ensure project designs are at the industry’s cutting edge. An ability to work independently, self-motivate, and communicate effectively with team members is of the utmost importance to this position.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of controls engineering experience in some of or all the following industries: Renewable Natural Gas and Biogas to Energy; Gas Processing; Chemical; Power; Waste Management; Environmental Air Quality Control Systems; Industrial Process Automation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a similar technical field from an accredited university.
  • Working knowledge of ISA, NFPA, UL, safety codes, fire codes, and other industry standards.
  • Proficiency in process control instrumentation and common data communication protocols including Modbus and HART.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming and data communication.
  • Experience tuning control loops.
  • Proficiency in Studio 5000 PLC programing software.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 25%.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency with FactoryTalk (Rockwell Automation/Allen‑Bradley) and Ignition (Inductive Automation) software.
  • Advanced optimization, trouble shooting, and/or process design skills in a process simulation package.
  • Experience in process optimization, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis (RCA) in an energy or manufacturing environment.
  • E.I.T. certification or ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Proficiency in UL panel design.
  • Experience with process metrics and reporting key performance indicators (KPI).

Responsibilities

  • Review Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), electrical drawings, and operations manuals to ensure alignment with control system requirements.
  • Design and develop instrumentation and control (I&C) specifications, control narratives, and cause-and-effect matrices to support safe, reliable, and efficient system operation.
  • Specify measurement and analysis instrumentation and control components for automated industrial process control and plant safety.
  • Perform PLC programming.
  • Prepare and review UL panel drawings for fabrication.
  • Participate in project HAZOP studies.
  • Support the review and response to contractor RFIs.
  • Support Field Service work with through remote and on-site troubleshooting and optimization.
  • Plan and participate in on-site startup and commissioning activities.
  • Interact with other engineering disciplines and departments throughout the company.
  • Seek ways to improve and promote quality, demonstrating accuracy and thoroughness in all work.
  • Other duties as assigned.
