About The Position

The Controls Engineer at Quality Steel Corporation (QSC) designs, builds, and supports industrial control systems for manufacturing equipment and automation projects across the company’s four sites. This role is part of the machine-build group responsible for designing and building manufacturing equipment for internal use. The Controls Engineer owns the controls portion of the full build cycle, including controls design, panel construction, wiring, testing, commissioning, and ongoing support, along with PLC and HMI programming, electrical documentation, and troubleshooting. This role works on a cross-discipline team and spends time in the machine build shop and on plant floors during evaluation, planning, and commissioning.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of controls engineering experience in a manufacturing/industrial environment.
  • Strong proficiency in PLC and HMI programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Omron, Automation Direct, or equivalent).
  • Experience supporting control panel design/build, including debugging and field commissioning.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting industrial automation systems in production environments.
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or engineering-adjacent field (Electrical, Controls, Mechatronics, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, etc.) required.
  • Strong troubleshooting discipline, root cause analysis, and durable corrective actions.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and execute projects with minimal supervision.
  • Clear documentation and communication skills; able to work effectively with engineers and shop-floor teams.
  • Comfort working hands-on around machinery, panels, and plant utilities.
  • Familiarity with electrical CAD tools and documentation standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Functional safety exposure (safety PLCs/relays, risk assessment support, safety validation) preferred.
  • Motion control (servos), robotics integration, and/or vision systems is a plus.
  • Experience with data collection, industrial networking, and integration to MES/SCADA or dashboards preferred.
  • Experience with NEC/UL508A practices (or local equivalents) and industrial documentation standards is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement control systems for manufacturing equipment and automation projects from concept through commissioning and sustainment.
  • Develop and maintain PLC and HMI programs, including standards, reusable code, and clear documentation.
  • Create and maintain electrical drawings and controls documentation (schematics, panel layouts, I/O lists, network architecture, device lists, BOMs).
  • Specify sensors, instrumentation, safety devices, drives/VFDs/servos, pneumatic interfaces, and industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, etc. as applicable).
  • Coordinate with IT as needed for machine connectivity, monitoring, and data collection.
  • Support control panel build activities: review panel layouts, support panel assembly, verify wiring, and support panel debug.
  • Commission equipment: I/O checkout, safety validation support, tuning, runoffs, and operator handoff.
  • Support site maintenance teams when required; troubleshoot production issues (hardware, software, network, instrumentation) and drive durable corrective actions.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on OEE, downtime reduction, safety, quality, and process consistency.
  • Train maintenance and operations personnel on control system operation and safe troubleshooting practices.
