Controls Engineer Advisor_ Utility Scale Solar

EngieHouston, TX
Hybrid

About The Position

Supporting the BroadView Energy Management Platform, you will play a key role in the development and deployment of control systems for utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants. This role is designed for engineers with hands-on experience delivering controls solutions for large-scale solar projects who are comfortable owning plant-level control functionality within production environments. Within ENGIE’s dynamic and cross-functional engineering organization, you will design, implement, test, and support PV plant control algorithms that directly interface with inverters, meters, substation equipment, and SCADA systems. You will be expected to apply a strong understanding of utility-scale solar plant operations and how plant-level controls impact system performance, regulatory compliance, and operational reliability. This position requires prior experience working on utility-scale solar controls and is not intended for candidates with only entry-level exposure. At times, you may serve as the primary or sole controls engineering resource on a project, requiring a high level of technical ownership and independent problem-solving capability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Control Systems Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of professional experience developing control systems for utility scale solar PV projects. This experience must include direct involvement in solar plant controls, not only general industrial or automation work
  • Demonstrated experience developing controls code using CodeSys, MATLAB/Simulink, and other PLC or real-time platforms used in solar plant controllers
  • Experience developing and supporting HMI/SCADA systems for utility-scale solar plants using tools such as Ignition and PanelView
  • Knowledgeable in plant-level control architectures used within large-scale solar facilities, including communications networks, telemetry and data flows, and plant controller interactions with inverters and meters
  • Knowledgeable in utility and industrial communication protocols, including Modbus (TCP/RTU), DNP3, OPC UA, and MQTT
  • Experience performing SIL and HIL testing to validate solar plant control logic and system functionality
  • Experience working within a formal software development lifecycle, including configuration management and version control using Git
  • Proven experience developing, deploying, and supporting controls systems for utility-scale solar PV projects
  • Knowledgeable in how solar plants interact with the electrical grid, including inverter-based resource controls, dispatch behavior, and grid compliance requirements
  • Experience supporting commissioning activities, troubleshooting efforts, and operational issue resolution for large-scale solar facilities

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain plant level control algorithms specifically for utility scale solar PV facilities, including: Active power control and curtailment, Reactive power, voltage, and power factor control, Grid support and compliance functions
  • Implement controls logic using PLC and real time development environments such as CodeSys, MATLAB/Simulink, or equivalent platforms used in solar plant controllers
  • Apply solar specific operational knowledge when developing controls, including inverter behavior, availability limits, ramp rate constraints, and POI coordination
  • Develop and support HMI / SCADA interfaces for solar plants using platforms such as Ignition or PanelView
  • Integrate plant controllers with field devices and external systems using common utility grade communication protocols
  • Conduct and support Software in the Loop (SIL) and Hardware in the Loop (HIL) testing with a focus on validating solar plant performance prior to commissioning
  • Collaborate with power systems, commissioning, and operations teams to support real world utility scale solar deployments
  • Participate in architecture reviews, plant control narratives, and design documentation specific to solar projects
  • Own controls development tasks end to end for assigned utility scale solar projects
