About The Position

E-J is seeking a motivated and skilled Controller responsible for the comprehensive oversight of the financial operations across E-J Electric Installation Co’s 9 divisions, including general ledger maintenance, operational reporting, regulatory compliance, as well as the management of accounts receivable, accounts payable, and billing functions. The Controller supports informed decision-making at both the leadership and project levels. Your expertise in construction accounting, job cost management, financial reporting, billing, and cash flow management will help drive operational efficiency, strengthen financial performance, and support the company’s continued success.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 12+ years of experience in construction accounting, or construction accounting operations with significant systems responsibility.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles (GAAP) and payroll processing.
  • Strong knowledge of job cost accounting, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
  • Experience with system implementations or major upgrades.
  • Hands-on experience with accounting and payroll systems (ERP or mid-market platforms).
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with reporting or BI tools a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain strong controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and job cost accounting.
  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements by the company and consolidated, including variance analysis and management reporting.
  • Manage insurance reporting, bonding capacity requirements, lien waivers, and compliance documentation.
  • Liase with FP&A to ensure accurate closing of Monthly Financials
  • Coordinate audits, tax reviews, and financial reporting with external auditors, advisors, bonding companies, and banking partners.
  • Maintain chart of accounts, department level structure, Project Manager job access and Payroll Access
  • Own and manage the monthly close process and close calendar
  • Ensure timely and accurate production of WIP and management reports
  • Lead monthly financial review meetings with divisional and operational leadership to review performance, discuss challenges (margin slippage, high underbilling’s, unapproved change orders) and identify risks and opportunities
  • Oversee accounts payable operations and vendor payment processes
  • Oversee customer billing, including progress billings and contract-based invoicing
  • Ensure effective management of accounts receivable and collections
  • Maintain controls over cash disbursements and cash receipts
  • Oversee payroll processing and ensure accurate and timely payment of employees
  • Oversee certified payroll, union reporting, and related compliance requirements
  • Oversee payroll audits, payroll tax filings, benefits deductions, and related reporting
