About The Position

McDaniel Family Services a dynamic and growing company seeking an experienced Controller to lead the accounting and financial operations for a growing 14-store grocery chain across multiple locations. This role is hands-on and strategic, responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, and supporting ownership with accurate, timely financial insights. The ideal candidate has multi-unit retail or grocery experience, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and is comfortable balancing operational details with big-picture financial strategy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Multi-unit retail or grocery experience strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of inventory accounting and margin analysis
  • Experience with payroll accounting and multi-entity structures
  • Advanced Excel skills

  • Experience with Sage Intacct or similar ERP
  • Grocery, convenience store, or high-volume retail background
  • Experience supporting growth, acquisitions, or new store openings

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting functions for 14 store entities and related management companies
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Manage period-end close (including accruals, prepaid expenses, inventory adjustments, and intercompany entries)
  • Ensure accurate store-level P&Ls and consolidated reporting
  • Assist ownership with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning
  • Oversee AP, AR, payroll accounting, and bank reconciliations
  • Review and monitor inventory accounting, shrink, and margin analysis
  • Ensure proper expense classification and consistency across stores
  • Support store managers and operations with financial data and reporting
  • Coordinate payroll accounting across multiple locations and states
  • Ensure compliance with sales tax, payroll tax, and other regulatory filings
  • Strengthen internal controls and financial processes
  • Support audits, lender reporting, and insurance requirements
  • Work within and optimize accounting systems (e.g., Sage Intacct, POS integrations, payroll systems)
  • Improve workflows, reporting accuracy, and closing timelines
  • Partner with IT, HR, and Operations on system upgrades and process changes
  • Manage and mentor accounting staff
  • Serve as a financial partner to ownership, operations, and department leaders
  • Communicate financial results clearly to non-financial stakeholders
