About The Position

Merit Advisors delivers specialty tax, valuation, and advisory services that help energy companies increase cash flow and unlock value enterprise-wide. For over 25 years, we have served as trusted partners across commodity cycles, supporting companies of every scale—from PE-backed startups to supermajor oil and gas companies. We are seeking a proactive and experienced Controller to report directly to the CFO and play a pivotal role in managing the accounting function and ensuring financial accuracy and compliance. This role involves close collaboration with the executive team, accounting, and various departments to provide financial reporting to inform business strategy and direction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
  • CPA certification
  • 7 - 10+ years of accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership or Controller capacity
  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP compliance
  • Strong ERP systems acumen and Microsoft Excel skillset
  • Exceptional attention to detail, analytical ability, and integrity
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally and manage multiple priorities in a growth environment

Responsibilities

  • Managing the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of consolidated business results
  • Timely coordination and scheduling of monthly accounting close
  • Preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial and management reports, providing management with information vital to the decision-making process
  • Responsible for directing the company's accounting function
  • Oversight of the payroll function
  • Responsible for treasury functions including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and cash management
  • In coordination with the Accounting and Finance leadership, directs the establishment of accounting principles, practices and procedures in compliance with GAAP
  • Oversee and coordinate tax filings and regulatory compliance
  • Manage the year-end close, preparing annual financial statements, annual audit, and compiling required audit schedules and reconciliations
  • Manage the annual budgeting process, including directing team members on account-level historical research and future estimation, incorporating final budgets accurately into Merit's ERP system, and ensuring the budget schedule stays on track
  • Analysis and interpretation of trends requiring management's attention
  • Assist in acquisitions, integrations and system implementations as needed
  • Identifying opportunities to streamline and automate accounting / reporting functions
  • Review and recommend modifications to systems, procedures, and internal controls
