About The Position

This is a hands-on accounting role. Candidates seeking an oversight-only, review-only, or management-only position should not apply. Syscon is seeking a hands-on Controller to own the day-to-day accounting function for our growing technology consulting business. This role is ideal for an experienced Senior Accountant who is ready for broader ownership and a Controller title—without stepping away from execution. This is a working seat. You will personally perform the accounting work, stay close to the numbers, and be accountable for accuracy and follow-through. What This Role Is (and Is Not) This role is for someone who: Personally performs the accounting work Owns the general ledger and month-end close Learns the business by understanding how transactions flow through the chart of accounts Uses systems and technology to work efficiently Is comfortable being visible, accountable, and hands-on This role is not for someone who: Primarily reviews or oversees others’ work Has moved away from day-to-day accounting Prefers managing people over executing the work Is looking to return to hands-on accounting after years in an oversight role What You’ll Be Personally Responsible For Personally performing and completing month-end and year-end close Preparing and posting journal entries Completing bank and balance sheet reconciliations Maintaining a clean, accurate general ledger Managing job costing and cost allocations Reviewing financials for accuracy and reasonableness Preparing monthly financial statements Supporting budgeting and forecasting Working directly with leadership to answer financial questions Ensuring accounting data is well-documented, searchable, and reliable Systems & Technology Expectations Hands-on experience with ERP accounting systems preferred, including: Sage 100 Contractor and Acumatica Experience with comparable ERPs such as Dynamics, NetSuite, or similar will also be considered Strong Excel skills Comfortable learning systems quickly and independently Uses digital tools to track work, notes, and follow-ups Avoids paper-based or memory-based workflows Who Thrives in This Role You’ll do well here if you: Think operationally, not just technically Proactively learn the chart of accounts when entering a new role Adapt quickly to systems and tools Are comfortable in a business-paced, owner-led environment Prefer direct communication and clear expectations Take pride in owning your work end to end Why Join Syscon Meaningful work supporting a real, growing business Direct access to leadership and clear expectations Strong accountability and ownership culture Small, experienced team where your work truly matters Opportunity to expand scope, impact, and responsibility over time Syscon is a place where people who take ownership, learn quickly, and follow through tend to thrive. Location & Work Model Full-time position Remote-first role Typical schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM (CST preferred) Preference given to candidates located near Phoenix, AZ Candidates within a 60-mile radius of Phoenix should expect periodic in-person collaboration Periodic team meetings may be held in Phoenix or the Chicago area Syscon does not maintain a traditional corporate office environment. This role is designed for someone comfortable working independently with clear accountability. Why This Role Exists Syscon needs a hands-on Controller who will own the day-to-day accounting work, keep the books clean and accurate, and learn how the business operates at a detailed level. This role exists to bring consistency, accountability, and operational clarity to the accounting function. We are looking for someone who is doing the work today, uses technology naturally, learns the chart of accounts proactively, and is comfortable working in a fast-paced, owner-driven environment.

Requirements

  • 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Recent (within the past 1–2 years) hands-on responsibility for: Month-end close, Journal entries, Bank and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Senior Accountant–level or working Controller background
  • Experience in job costing, project-based, or operational accounting environments
  • Hands-on experience with ERP accounting systems preferred, including: Sage 100 Contractor and Acumatica
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Comfortable learning systems quickly and independently
  • Uses digital tools to track work, notes, and follow-ups
  • Avoids paper-based or memory-based workflows
  • Thinks operationally, not just technically
  • Proactively learn the chart of accounts when entering a new role
  • Adapt quickly to systems and tools
  • Are comfortable in a business-paced, owner-led environment

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with comparable ERPs such as Dynamics, NetSuite, or similar will also be considered
  • Prior Controller title not required (This role is often a natural next step for an experienced Senior Accountant.)
