Controller, Fund and Portfolio Accounting

Onni Group of CompaniesVancouver, BC
Onsite

About The Position

This is a unique controller role focused on construction rather than maintenance. Onni Capital invests its own capital, meaning the reporting system is built to inform decisions, not just satisfy compliance. The role offers close proximity to transactions, involvement in structuring conversations for acquisitions and new business setups, and the opportunity to establish proper accounting systems from day one. The team operates with high ownership and low bureaucracy, encouraging direct communication, initiative, and a blend of strategic analysis and hands-on execution. This position is ideal for someone who thrives on solving ambiguous problems and building something from the ground up, rather than seeking a rigid job description or extensive consensus-building.

Requirements

  • CPA designation, with meaningful private equity, fund, or investment management accounting experience.
  • Owned fund level books, investor reporting, and capital account mechanics before.
  • Direct experience with purchase accounting and business combinations, including purchase price allocation and opening balance sheets.
  • Experience owning an external audit end to end.
  • Experience implementing an accounting system from scratch, or materially rebuilding one.
  • Genuine financial planning and analysis capability. Budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and the judgment to know which variances matter.
  • Treasury capability, including cash forecasting, banking administration, payment controls, and management of debt facilities and covenant compliance.
  • Experience designing and operating an internal control framework, including segregation of duties, approval authorities, and fraud prevention.
  • Working command of corporate and indirect tax compliance, and the judgment to know when to bring in an external advisor.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge under ASPE and IFRS, with the ability to research a position, document it, and defend it.
  • Comfort with consolidation across multiple entities, including intercompany transactions and eliminations.
  • Demonstrated ability to use modern AI tools to automate reporting, reconciliation, analysis, and documentation.
  • Strong written communication. You can put a financial result in front of ownership in one page and have it land.
  • The judgment to build controls proportionate to the business rather than importing a public company control framework into a twenty person team.
  • Comfort operating without a shared services function behind you. If it is a finance task, it is yours to solve rather than to route somewhere else.
  • Comfort working in a small, fast moving team where the answer is often that no process exists yet and you need to create one.
  • High personal standards for accuracy, quality, ownership, and follow through.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience at a fund administrator, or having transitioned a fund from third party administration to self administration.
  • Experience with construction, industrial services, real estate, or data centre accounting.
  • Experience setting up accounting for newly formed operating companies.
  • Familiarity with QuickBooks, and with modern finance tooling for expense management, billing, and reporting automation.
  • Big Four transaction services or audit background.
  • Experience supporting a business through rapid entity growth, where the number of legal entities multiplied quickly.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and operate the fund accounting system in house, including chart of accounts, entity structure, consolidation logic, and intercompany eliminations.
  • Own the management fee calculation and billing cycle, and the supporting expense allocation methodology.
  • Produce quarterly investor reporting packages, including capital account statements, performance reporting, and portfolio commentary.
  • Produce annual audited financial statements and manage the external audit end to end.
  • Complete annual portfolio valuations, document the methodology, and defend the marks to auditors and ownership.
  • Track and report returns at fund and asset level, including IRR, MOIC, and performance against acquisition basis.
  • Own treasury across the platform, including daily cash position, liquidity management, and short term cash forecasting.
  • Own banking relationships and account structure, including account opening, signing authorities, entitlements, and the payment approval matrix.
  • Manage payment execution and controls, including wire and electronic funds transfer authorisation, dual approval thresholds, and fraud prevention.
  • Manage debt facilities and capital calls, including drawdowns, repayments, covenant compliance, and lender reporting.
  • Manage foreign exchange exposure across Canadian and United States operations, and the movement of funds between entities.
  • Manage surplus cash and short term investment of idle balances within approved policy.
  • Own the annual budget and the rolling forecast for Onni Capital and for the operating companies it builds.
  • Produce monthly variance analysis with commentary that explains why a number moved, not just that it moved.
  • Build and maintain the reporting cadence: monthly management reporting, quarterly investor reporting, annual audited financials.
  • Model cash requirements across the platform and flag funding needs before they become urgent.
  • Design and operate the internal control framework, including segregation of duties, approval limits, delegation of authority, and documented policies proportionate to a business of this size.
  • Own the accounting policy manual and ensure consistent application across every entity.
  • Own tax compliance across the platform, including corporate filings, indirect tax, cross border considerations, and coordination with Onni Group counsel and external tax advisors.
  • Maintain the entity register and ensure statutory filings, corporate records, and regulatory obligations are met for every entity.
  • Coordinate insurance and the finance side of risk management across the platform.
  • Own the finance technology stack, including selection, implementation, and integration of accounting, reporting, expense, and treasury systems.
  • Own the accounting function for the businesses Onni Capital starts, including implementation of the accounting system, chart of accounts, and month end close.
  • Establish the billing, revenue recognition, and cost allocation approach for specific operating companies.
  • Set up banking, payment controls, expense management, and approval thresholds for each new entity as it is formed.
  • Own purchase accounting on acquisitions alongside the private equity team, including purchase price allocation, opening balance sheets, contingent consideration, and post close true ups.
  • Support diligence on quality of earnings, working capital pegs, and net debt calculations.
  • Advise on entity structuring and transaction accounting implications ahead of close.
  • Set up treasury, banking, and controls inside newly acquired businesses as part of the first hundred days.
  • Manage the Intermediate Accountant and build out the accounting team as the platform grows.
  • Automate reporting wherever it can be automated, using modern AI and finance tooling rather than adding headcount.
  • Document processes, models, decisions, and operating standards so successful approaches can be repeated across the team.
