About The Position

Caterpillar Inc. is seeking a Senior Controls Engineer to provide technical leadership in the development, integration, and validation of electro-hydraulic (EH) implement control systems for Caterpillar machines. The role involves developing and maintaining control algorithms, feature requirements, and system architectures for EH implement systems. This includes model-based design, embedded software development and integration, calibration, tuning, and verification & validation. The engineer will also contribute to AUTOSAR-based software strategy, support NPI programs, collaborate with various product groups, and support functional safety activities aligned with ISO standards, guiding system behavior during fault conditions and degraded modes.

Requirements

BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field.
Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.
Communicating Complex Concepts: Knowledge of effective presentation tools and techniques to ensure clear understanding; ability to use summarization and simplification techniques to explain complex technical concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience.
Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.
Technology Advising: Knowledge of effective advisory methods and ability to provide valued information and advice to clients regarding products, technologies, services and solutions for a specific technology domain.
Conceptual Thinking: Knowledge of thinking and reasoning at a conceptual level; ability to identify the critical ideas and interdependencies among system elements that impact performance.
Embedded Systems: Knowledge of embedded systems and their applications; ability to develop embedded systems with varying levels of complexity to control the operations of the machine it is embedded within.
Requirements Analysis: Knowledge of tools, methods, and techniques of requirement analysis; ability to elicit, analyze and record required business functionality and non-functionality requirements to ensure the success of a system or software development project.
Technical Troubleshooting: Knowledge of technical troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, recognize, and resolve technical issues on hardware, software, application or operation.

Nice To Haves

Strong experience in EH implement or hydraulic machine control systems
Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink model-based development
Experience with AUTOSAR architecture and modular software platforms
Knowledge of systems engineering, requirements management, and validation practices
Proven experience with control system architecture, modular software design, and system integration.

Responsibilities

Develop and maintain control algorithms, feature requirements, and system architectures for EH implement systems (e.g., lift, tilt, blade, work tool, auxiliary functions) through activities including: Model-based design (MATLAB/Simulink), Embedded software development and integration, Calibration and tuning, Verification & Validation (V&V).
Contribute to AUTOSAR-based software strategy and modular control implementations.
Support NPI programs through system integration, issue resolution, and production readiness.
Collaborate closely with hydraulics, electronics, software validation, and product groups.
Support functional safety activities, including safety goal definition, hazard analysis, and alignment with ISO standards.
Guide system behavior during fault conditions, degraded modes, and safe-state operation.
