About The Position

Caterpillar Inc. is seeking a Senior Controls Engineer to provide technical leadership in the development, integration, and validation of electro-hydraulic (EH) implement control systems for Caterpillar machines. The role involves developing and maintaining control algorithms, feature requirements, and system architectures for EH implement systems. This includes model-based design, embedded software development and integration, calibration, tuning, and verification & validation. The engineer will also contribute to AUTOSAR-based software strategy, support NPI programs, collaborate with various product groups, and support functional safety activities aligned with ISO standards, guiding system behavior during fault conditions and degraded modes.

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field.
  • Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.
  • Communicating Complex Concepts: Knowledge of effective presentation tools and techniques to ensure clear understanding; ability to use summarization and simplification techniques to explain complex technical concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience.
  • Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.
  • Technology Advising: Knowledge of effective advisory methods and ability to provide valued information and advice to clients regarding products, technologies, services and solutions for a specific technology domain.
  • Conceptual Thinking: Knowledge of thinking and reasoning at a conceptual level; ability to identify the critical ideas and interdependencies among system elements that impact performance.
  • Embedded Systems: Knowledge of embedded systems and their applications; ability to develop embedded systems with varying levels of complexity to control the operations of the machine it is embedded within.
  • Requirements Analysis: Knowledge of tools, methods, and techniques of requirement analysis; ability to elicit, analyze and record required business functionality and non-functionality requirements to ensure the success of a system or software development project.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Knowledge of technical troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, recognize, and resolve technical issues on hardware, software, application or operation.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong experience in EH implement or hydraulic machine control systems
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink model-based development
  • Experience with AUTOSAR architecture and modular software platforms
  • Knowledge of systems engineering, requirements management, and validation practices
  • Proven experience with control system architecture, modular software design, and system integration.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain control algorithms, feature requirements, and system architectures for EH implement systems (e.g., lift, tilt, blade, work tool, auxiliary functions) through activities including: Model-based design (MATLAB/Simulink), Embedded software development and integration, Calibration and tuning, Verification & Validation (V&V).
  • Contribute to AUTOSAR-based software strategy and modular control implementations.
  • Support NPI programs through system integration, issue resolution, and production readiness.
  • Collaborate closely with hydraulics, electronics, software validation, and product groups.
  • Support functional safety activities, including safety goal definition, hazard analysis, and alignment with ISO standards.
  • Guide system behavior during fault conditions, degraded modes, and safe-state operation.
