About The Position

Rolls-Royce is looking for a Control System Safety Engineer to join their growing team in Indianapolis, IN. This role involves working on flagship programs and solving complex technological challenges within a global, multi-disciplinary team. The engineer will develop and maintain Safety Cases for Electronic Engine Control and Monitoring Systems, ensuring designs are single fault tolerant and meet certification requirements. Responsibilities include providing technical guidance to a team, supporting full life cycle development, and mentoring junior engineers. The role offers opportunities for travel up to 20% between Rolls-Royce sites and up to 10% for other travel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical or Computer Engineering with 2+ years of product development engineering experience, OR Master’s degree in in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical or Computer Engineering, OR PhD in degree in in Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical or Computer Engineering.
  • Experience with requirements management.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years of product safety engineering experience.
  • Application of agile development methods to deliver engineering work products.
  • Experience with military qualification and/or FAA certification of airborne systems.
  • Familiarity with the following standards: ARP4754, ARP4761, MIL-STD-882, MIL-STD-1629, DO-178C, DO-254.
  • Gas turbine engine, propulsion, or electrical control system experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with control system design and one or more of the following tools: Fault Tree+, Reliability Workbench, DOORS.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering, and robust design tools and techniques coupled with the latest model-centric development approaches.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the Safety Cases for Electronic Engine Control and Monitoring Systems to ensure the design is single fault tolerant and meets the engine functional hazard rates and all applicable certification requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance, counsel, and direction to a small team of engineers to ensure technical outcomes are delivered to appropriate standards and quality.
  • Work with a global engineering community to identify areas for collaboration and knowledge exchange.
  • Support full life cycle development.
  • Mentor junior engineers on processes, tools, and technical solutions.
  • Collaborate with other teams and customers to develop electrical, electronics and mechatronics control system safety work products such as: System Safety and Reliability Assessment, Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) or Common Cause Analysis (CCA).
  • Work with a cross-functional team to establish the highest standards of technical capability, quality, professionalism, and teamwork.
  • Provide and support engineering and process guidance, training and create documentation.
  • Prepare and review engineering work products for technical documentation, quality, completeness.
  • Resolve complex problems through the application of acquired technical experience and knowledge.
  • Develop and communicate complex technical ideas and information in a concise and logical way.
