About The Position

The Control Room Operations Specialist supports real-time toll road and traffic operations to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable roadway performance. This position operates within a 24/7 control room environment and requires flexibility to work assigned shifts that may vary based on operational needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • at least 1 year(s) of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Must pass a pre-employment Drug and Alcohol Test
  • Must demonstrate eligibility to work in U.S.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license is a requirement for this job.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in traffic operations, transportation management centers (TMC), control room operations, or related fields preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-responsibility environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computer-based monitoring systems and data entry tools.
  • Flexibility to work varying shifts in a 24/7 operational environment.
  • Familiarity with TxDOT systems and procedures is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor tolling infrastructure, toll rate displays, and roadway signage multiple times per hour to ensure accurate operation.
  • Rapidly identify and address system issues, notifying on-call personnel and field teams as needed.
  • Monitor traffic flow and roadway conditions using computerized traffic management systems, CCTV cameras, and loop detector systems.
  • Detect congestion, incidents, or abnormal traffic conditions in real time.
  • Update Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) to inform motorists of accidents, construction activity, lane closures, and weather-related impacts.
  • Ensure messaging is accurate, timely, and compliant with operational guidelines.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement, emergency responders, and maintenance teams to manage traffic incidents, stalled vehicles, debris, and roadway hazards.
  • Assist in incident management to minimize traffic impacts and maintain roadway safety.
  • Receive and respond to calls regarding stranded motorists or roadway incidents.
  • Locate, identify, and dispatch appropriate emergency response services or wreckers as needed.
  • Accurately document incidents, debris, hazards, and traffic conditions in TxDOT and internal systems.
  • Maintain detailed and timely records to support compliance and reporting requirements.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and minor maintenance of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment.
  • Support traffic management system updates and operational adjustments as required.
