About The Position

This is an apprenticeship role for a Control Room Operator B at Xcel Energy in Lubbock, TX. The position involves the safe operation, inspection, and cleaning of plant equipment, including unit startup and shutdown. The role requires active participation in hands-on, classroom, and computer-based training to complete a 4-year apprentice program and qualify as a Control Room Operator B Journeyman. Travel to other locations may be required. The work environment includes exposure to energized/rotating equipment, confined spaces, vibrations, heights, noise, chemical fumes, lead, dust, and a wide range of temperatures. Employees will work on ladders, scaffolding, and uneven surfaces, and may handle hazardous materials. Physical requirements include walking, climbing stairs and ladders, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must have successfully passed the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Plant Operator Selection Systems (POSS) test
  • Must work rotating shifts
  • Must respond to overtime and call outs
  • Must commit to working safely and adhere to Company safety rules including wearing a hard hat, safety footwear, protective eye wear and Proper Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Able to lift 50 pounds
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must be respirator qualified (Pulmonary Function Test)
  • Must take Base line Audiogram
  • Successfully pass the Xcel Energy screening requirements, which include a drug test, security clearance and other exams that are required by federal regulations, such as OSHA and DOT, will be performed as required

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of equipment operation such as pumps and motor controls
  • Power plant/industrial operations experience desired
  • One year of industrial electrical experience desired
