About The Position

The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is seeking dedicated candidates for our Contractual Correctional Officer II position. The Correctional Officer II is the full performance level of work in the custody, security, and supervision of adult inmates confined in a correctional facility. Employees in this classification receive close supervision and do not supervise other correctional officers. They are assigned to morning, evening, night, or rotating shifts. Responsibilities include facilitating the transportation of incarcerated individuals to and from medical appointments statewide, exercising care, custody, and control over incarcerated individuals, administering emergency medical assistance, performing physically demanding tasks, communicating effectively, analyzing situations, and providing guidance to incarcerated individuals.

Requirements

• High school diploma or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education.
• One year of experience as a correctional officer involving the custody and security of adult inmates.
• Retired State of Maryland Correctional Officers who are eligible for recertification with the Maryland Correctional Training Commission.
• Possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland (if assigned duties requiring vehicle operation).
• Obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger and air brake endorsements valid in the State of Maryland (if assigned to operate buses).
• Meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for a correctional officer during their probationary period.
• U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Completed background investigation (Inclusive of a polygraph).
• Oral interview.
• Physical examination.
• Successfully complete the Entrance Level Firearms Training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission and demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis (for those hired or reinstated on or after July 1, 2016).
• Provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
• Subject to substance abuse testing.
• No felony convictions.
• No misdemeanor convictions within five (5) years.
• No probations before judgement or parole and probation within five (5) years.
• Must not currently be on parole or probation.
• No civil drug convictions within three (3) years.
• No convictions or probation before judgement on any 12-point violation within five (5) years.
• No separations less than honorable from military service.

Nice To Haves

• Prior Drug Use - The Commission may not certify an applicant to a mandated position if the applicant has within a 12 month period immediately preceding the date of hire, unlawfully used natural cannabis or natural cannabinoids.
• Driving Records - Including but not limited to driving under the influence, driving while intoxicated, attempting to flee/ elude police and/or driving while license is refused / suspended / revoked / canceled.
• Academy - Must meet the guidelines for certification by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate the transportation of Incarcerated Individuals to and from medical appointments statewide.
• Exercise care, custody and control over incarcerated individuals.
• Administer emergency medical assistance to both incarcerated individuals and staff.
• Perform physically demanding tasks e.g. running, physical control of incarcerated individuals, lifting.
• Effectively communicate verbally and in writing with incarcerated individuals and staff.
• Analyze situations and problems and provide appropriate solutions.
• Provides advice and guidance in assisting incarcerated individuals in their adjustment to institutional rules and regulations.
