About The Position

Concordia University, St. Paul is seeking a Contracted Faculty of Practice (Adjunct) to serve as the Online MFA Program Chair. This part-time position involves administrative leadership, curriculum coordination, and instruction within the Master's of Fine Arts in Writing program. The Program Chair is responsible for upholding the university's mission and goals, facilitating departmental operations, overseeing curriculum development, and supporting faculty and staff. The role requires a commitment to student-centered learning, innovation, and excellence in teaching, all within the context of the university's Christian mission. The position is online, with potential for synchronous meetings and work. Courses are asynchronous online. Compensation is $1,000 per credit, with the Program Chair role being 2 credits per semester.

Requirements

  • Completion of a graduate degree in English, creative writing, or a related field.
  • At least one book in publication or under contract at the time of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead in the development and implementation of mission, vision, goals, and values for the department.
  • Build morale, conduct timely evaluations, and plan/convene regular meetings.
  • Maintain major departmental documents as required by the university and regulatory bodies.
  • Collaborate with the Registrar regarding course offerings and scheduling.
  • Ensure accountability of faculty for additional responsibilities.
  • Maintain continuous quality improvement and participate in necessary meetings.
  • Coordinate accreditation and assessment data.
  • Resolve issues to ensure due process.
  • Provide orientation to the University for new faculty and staff.
  • Ensure alignment with strategic goals and plans.
  • Foster an engaging and active learning environment for students.
  • Demonstrate awareness of and receptivity to current educational philosophies.
  • Encourage continued program development and departmental innovation.
  • Update and approve development of department curricula, in consultation with the College Dean.
  • Coordinate efforts as required by accreditation and regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain updated files of course syllabi for all currently active courses.
  • Assist in the recruitment, development, support, and supervision of departmental faculty and staff.
  • Initiate requests for new faculty and serve as chair for search committees.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews of faculty and staff under oversight.
  • Recruit, supervise, and evaluate Contracted Faculty of Practice for the department.
  • Lead faculty development, including annual Professional Development Plans in cooperation with the College Dean.
  • Provide oversight of department partnerships.
  • Promote alumni relations as appropriate.
  • Facilitate quality student learning through teaching assigned courses.
  • Increase student course engagement by providing a positive and regular presence within the course (at least four days per week for online courses) by engaging students through course activities and ongoing availability to provide student support.
  • Provide substantive and timely feedback on course assessments, following academic unit and university guidelines, within the Learning Management System, typically within five business days of the assessments’ due dates.
  • Respond to student inquiries typically within 24 hours during business days unless otherwise specified at the college level (48 hours on weekends, with closer monitoring if assignments are due during the weekend or on Monday).
  • Work collaboratively in a supportive academic environment, partnering with academic advising, career development, and the academic team to ensure each student has the resources they need to succeed.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Follow the university and academic unit’s policies and procedures.
