About The Position

As part of our Youth Services Department's vision, all Youth Services Staff will help promote growth, leadership, and positive self-image in young people at all Grand Street Settlement sites. Education Specialists will promote and develop a safe and engaging learning environment for youth. The Content Specialist's scope of work includes homework help, small-group or individualized tutoring, creating literacy and STEM lessons, and supervising group leaders facilitating lessons.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Must have experience teaching and designing curricula
  • One (1) or more years' experience supervising staff
  • Three (3) or more years' experience & expertise working with youth (volunteer experience is acceptable).
  • Three (3) or more years' experience coaching, instructing, or facilitating curriculum-based lessons (to youth preferred).
  • Must have experience working with youth in grades K-12.
  • Ideal candidate is personable, energetic, & enthusiastic.
  • Candidate must complete the following: NYSDOH Fingerprinting Screening; New York State Clearance Review Background Check-$25 nonrefundable fee; 3 Reference Checks; Physical w/ updated TB Test (Fees may apply)
  • Candidates must communicate effectively with all students while remaining professional at all times, and motivate students while setting an example in all areas, including responsibility, timeliness, organization, attendance, and, most importantly, professionalism.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in education or related fields preferred
  • Valid CPR/AED Pro certification through a recognized accrediting body preferred.
  • Valid First Aid/RTE certification through a recognized accrediting body preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee tutoring component of the program and supervise academic tutors
  • Assess students' academic progress by collecting report cards & entering report grids, and communicate with parents, teachers, & school administration.
  • Create/develop individual educational plans
  • Oversee group leaders' facilitation of lesson plans
  • Conduct observations of lessons and meet with group leaders to discuss strategies
  • Coordinate & facilitate academic activities such as games & events
  • Prepare reports as required
  • Problem-solve and intervene directly with youth
  • Special Projects as assigned
  • Engage children and young adults in conversation to determine their needs and interests.
  • Plan and facilitate all program activities to meet each participant's needs.
  • Conduct staff training programs to ensure all personnel are aligned on achieving program objectives.
  • Coordinate community relations campaigns to promote youth programs
  • Provide literacy intervention materials and resources to members of educational programs
  • Work with Grand St Settlement Education Team to implement curriculum for our yearly learning cycles through the lens of SEL: Leadership, Discovery, and Health & Wellness, ensuring participants are working towards capstone projects and being represented at culminating events; goals of the cycles to build on participants’ hard and soft skills
  • Provide job preparation services individually and through workshops, including training in resume building, dressing for success, and interview preparation.
  • Provide staff support for running other youth development or support service programs.
  • Develop and coordinate youth development programs as defined through grant contracts and community need.
  • Coordinate annual workshop series for college applications and topics including financial aid, scholarships, and personal statement writing.
  • Evaluate programs to ensure that they meet the needs of the youth and are effective in producing their intended outcomes.
