About The Position

The Consumer Loan Underwriter reviews and underwrites credit requests within assigned lending authority limits. The role supports and demonstrates a commitment to a sales culture, applies knowledge of lending products and services, and maintains an overall understanding of the credit union’s offerings. The underwriter aims to exceed internal and external members’ expectations by anticipating needs, responding promptly, and working toward credit union objectives.

Requirements

High school education or GED required.
One year of loan authority experience, excluding automated approvals, demonstrating proficient skill in making loan decisions on motor vehicles and unsecured credit requests; alternatively, four years of consumer lending experience demonstrating proficient skill in originating, processing, or collecting loans.

Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

Promptly review and act on credit requests submitted through direct and indirect platforms.
Approve or decline consumer loan requests using prudent judgment within designated lending authority and in accordance with credit union policies and guidelines.
Increase, decrease, or change conditions of existing lines of credit within authorized guidelines.
Process loans as warranted.
Communicate lending decisions on indirect loan applications to assigned dealers in a manner that provides prompt and efficient service.
Guide associates on loan alternatives and solutions, recommending different credit union loan products and services.
Maintain knowledge of direct and indirect lending markets.
Explain loan policies, credit-granting criteria, interest rates, loan calculations, and the procedures and required documentation for each loan product.
