As a Consumer Loan Underwriter, you will be responsible for evaluating and underwriting credit requests across our branch network. You will analyze applicants' creditworthiness, financial standing, and repayment ability to make high-quality lending decisions. By balancing borrower character and capacity with established policies and procedures, you will protect the credit union's assets while delivering an exceptional experience to our members.

Requirements

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of similar or related financial lending and underwriting experience.
  • A two-year college degree, a specialized professional certification/license, or equivalent completion of vendor-conducted specialized training or apprenticeship programs.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to handle first-level conflict resolution.
  • Exceptional diplomacy, tact, and the ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and discretion.
  • Excellent active listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Windows-based programs, and strong data entry/typing skills.
  • Must understand the credit union philosophy and system.
  • A Level 2 Lending Authority or higher with the clear potential to achieve Level 3 authority within six (6) months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Receive loan applications from the central queue and analyze financial data to evaluate risk.
  • Approve loans within established credit union guidelines, set appropriate terms, and collaborate with branch staff on approvals.
  • Forward complex requests to higher authority levels when necessary, and contact applicants directly to clarify details and ensure a seamless experience.
  • Review credit reports and applications to identify cross-selling opportunities.
  • Proactively uncover additional outstanding loan prospects to assist members, effectively matching credit union products and services to their financial needs.
  • Advise Account & Loan Representatives on application requirements and provide guidance when additional information is needed.
  • Offer comprehensive financial guidance to loan applicants and prepare weekly loan status reports.
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned by management.
  • Must be available to work on a weekend if needed.
