About The Position

The Consultation & Liaison Psychiatrist will partner with the Consultation & Liaison Psychologists to collaborate with a multidisciplinary medical team in supporting the care of patients with comorbid psychiatric and general medical conditions. The multidisciplinary team includes social work, care coordination, case management, advanced practice providers, pediatric hospital medicine, pediatric subspecialty services, and nursing, all working together to deliver high-quality, effective care. The Consultation & Liaison Psychiatrist will work with a diverse patient population performing evaluations, emphasizing short-term treatment interventions, developing collaborative treatment plans/recommendations, and facilitating referrals for ongoing care as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduate from accredited school of medicine
  • Successful completion of a Psychiatry residency required.
  • Successful completion of a Child & Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship required.
  • Must possess current, unrestricted license to practice in the State of Connecticut, and must be maintained thereafter.
  • DEA with Controlled Substance required and must be maintained thereafter.
  • Board Certification / Board Eligible in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry required.
  • BLS within 6 months of hire.
  • Maintain CME units based on the requirements of the specifying board, as well as maintain all licensure requirements.
  • Possess strong clinical and academic background.
  • Possess an understanding and advancement of medical science, education and the provision of healthcare to patients with psychiatric concerns.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients on assigned unit(s).
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong sense of organization, prioritization and efficiency.
  • Skilled in child & adolescent psychiatry.
  • Apply current knowledge to the interpretation and organization of data gathered through the assessment process.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry in a pediatric hospital setting preferred.
  • Experience in pediatric Consultation & Liaison work preferred.
  • CPI trained (or alternative de-escalation training) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consultation & liaison to multidisciplinary primary medical providers and behavioral health team.
  • Provide comprehensive evaluations and/or consult-focused evaluations, diagnosis and consultation or intervention to child and adolescent patients and their families in a manner consistent with evidence-based care and policy.
  • Assess both medical and psychiatric information including patient presentation, differential diagnosis, psychopharmacology needs and medication management, referral to care and/or community support systems as appropriate.
  • Review medical records, test results, lab reports and consultations as necessary.
  • Perform follow-ups as indicated per treatment plan, recommend medications when indicated, and create and update treatment recommendations.
  • Provide health promotion, education and counseling for patient/families related to medication, diagnosis, health issues and coping strategies.
  • Complete accurate and relevant electronic consult (new) and progress (follow-up) notes.
  • Communicate treatment recommendations to primary/consulting team.
  • Provide supervision and teaching for the Child & Adolescent Psychiatry fellows, General Psychiatry residents, other specialties requiring psychiatry training and medical students.
  • Ability to provide supervision of and collaboration with advanced psychiatric nurse practitioners.
  • Collaborate with physicians, clinicians, other agency providers, clinical support staff, administrative staff and community resources in meeting patient and family needs.
  • Participate in efforts to ensure compliance with JCAHO standards and other applicable accreditation and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in and meet all ethical and agency standards regarding treatment and documentation practices, QA/QI procedures, utilization management, emergency procedures, and program and patient outcomes.
  • Manage interdisciplinary team issues that affect clinical care of patients.
  • Participate in the identification and implementation of opportunities to enhance patient and family satisfaction.
  • Comply with scheduling and billing practices of the division and/or unit.
  • May participate in peer review, policy updates and/or root cause analyses as needed.
  • May provide care on the Med/Psych unit, in the ambulatory clinic or in the ED, as needed.
  • On-call coverage per division standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
