About The Position

We are recruiting for a mission-driven Consultation-Liaison Psychiatrist to join our team! Denver Health's Behavioral Health Services (BHS) is a large and rapidly expanding department providing psychiatric care across various settings. All physicians have an academic appointment at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, making it an excellent place for those interested in clinical education. This role involves providing psychiatric care as part of a multidisciplinary consultation-liaison (C-L) psychiatry team throughout Denver Health Hospital, including general medical floors, intensive care units, surgical step-down units, labor & delivery/mom-baby/ob-gyn services, pediatrics, and the correctional care medical facility. The psychiatrist will diagnose and treat complex and co-occurring medical, psychiatric, and substance use disorders, providing expert assessment and evidence-based, trauma-informed clinical care. Teaching and supervision of learners and trainees, including psychiatry residents, psychology interns, APPs, and medical students, are key components. Opportunities for involvement in quality improvement projects, data monitoring, and scholarly work are available. Administrative support functions and assistance with dispositional planning may be required, and temporary coverage of other inpatient psychiatry services may be requested.

Requirements

  • Doctorate Degree
  • Graduate of an accredited medical school.
  • MD or DO-Physician - State Medical Board Required
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment.
  • Able to effectively manage and direct medical staff activities while providing quality medical care.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, listening, and social skills.
  • Able to interact effectively with people of varied educational, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, skill levels and value systems.
  • Performs work duties in a professional manner.
  • Knowledgeable and compliant with all regulatory standards, including specialty level requirements.
  • Knowledge of major concepts, principles, and theories related to psychiatric disease processes (including serious and persistent mental illness, eating disorders, and trauma disorders), traumatic brain injury, intellectual disability, and recovery from polytrauma across the lifespan.
  • Ability to thoughtfully assess different psychiatric conditions co-occurring with complex medical conditions, ability to liaise with medical teams and advocate for patient needs.
  • Must have training in topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion and be willing to voice these values throughout work duties. This includes, but is not limited to, work with the underserved and unhoused population, social justice-oriented work, and trauma-informed, inclusive work.
  • Ability to respond to feedback and incorporate it into practice.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite; Excel, Outlook, and Word.
  • Knowledge of electronic health record preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship is preferred.
  • 1-3 years of work experience preferred.
  • Certification in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Preferred, but Not Required
  • Prior formal research publications and presentations is appreciated but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality clinical services to individuals currently hospitalized, often for co-occurring complex medical and psychiatric conditions, that is diversity-equity-inclusion-informed and trauma-informed as well as developmentally appropriate.
  • Works on a 7-on / 7-off schedule (Monday thru Sunday) with responsibilities to cover medication for opioid use disorder consults on weekends.
  • Obtains relevant medical histories, makes appropriate diagnoses, implements effective, evidence-based treatments.
  • Conducts risk assessments for suicide and violence among patients at risk due to psychiatric illness, including schizophrenia, bipolar, depressive, anxiety, substance use disorders, and personality disorders.
  • Applies treatment statutes for involuntary psychiatric and/or substance use disorder treatments.
  • Consults with providers who are part of the primary medical/surgical team and generates recommendations, referrals, and case management as indicated.
  • Interprets the results of relevant laboratory and imagining studies and applies them to the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric symptoms.
  • Generates documentation of assessment and intervention in the medical record in a timely manner.
  • Provides teaching and supervision to multi-disciplinary trainees and medical students.
  • Participates in quality improvement projects and academic efforts in research and professional writing.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in additional trainings, educational programs, reviewing current literature, and attending in-service meetings and workshops.
