About The Position

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is hiring a Construction Transportation Technician to support highway construction projects. As a Construction Transportation Technician, you will assist with construction inspection, materials testing, and project documentation to help ensure transportation projects are built safely and according to plan. This position may be filled as a Transportation Technician I or II, depending on qualifications and experience. Most employees start at the Technician I level and advance as they complete training through UDOT’s Construction Training Program (TEP).

Requirements

  • A Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 12-18 months via UDOT-provided training.
  • The ability to report to the UDOT Region Three Office within a 30-minute response time and provide 24-hour availability for emergency response.
  • A smartphone with a data plan (UDOT provides a monthly taxable allowance to help cover the cost).
  • The ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • A commitment to completing required training and certifications through the Construction Training Program (CTP).

Nice To Haves

  • Materials sampling/testing (soil, concrete, or asphalt).
  • Experience with construction logs, blueprints, or project plan reading.
  • A Class A CDL.
  • Construction/maintenance experience on highway or roadway projects.
  • Professional experience operating heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with inspection and documentation of UDOT construction projects.
  • Perform materials testing to ensure compliance with project specifications.
  • Monitor contractor work to verify it meets project plans and standards.
  • Document construction progress using department software systems.
  • Work with contractors and project teams to support successful project completion.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Transportation Technicians are also trained to assist with roadway maintenance operations when needed. After training, technicians may participate in maintenance activities such as snow removal during winter storms.
